Does anyone know if back protectors need replacing after a fall, and Is it ok to buy a second hand one, or are they like hats and should only ever be used from new? Thank you

I think its ok unless they are clearly broken cos they cant crack like a hat... not sure though

I think that BETA recommend you replace body protectors after about 3 years, as the foam degrades over time. This probably depends on how it has been stored (I would imagine that like most things, keeping them out of sunlight/extreme temperatures helps to prolong the lifespan). If you take a fall in it the foam should expand back to its normal shape but might be weakened in that spot. Personally I always buy a new one from a shop, fitted by someone who is qualified... same with hats.
