OH and I have lost the lovely little yard we have privately rented for the last three years. Next Saturday we are moving two of our four back onto a smashing but fairly large livery yard. (The other two - one is on loan and the 2yo is going to a friend for a couple of months holiday whilst we settle in but both will eventually join us again) When we found out we were losing the place, we were gutted as we have made loads of improvements over the years (our choice and I don't want to make out the YO to be an ogre, this is not the case at all) but now we are quite looking forward to not having to worry about the land management and the luxury of just being able to turn up, groom and ride.

We have already been added to the new yard's private FB page and been given a warm welcome by lots of the liveries, so I think this bodes well but I know this will be a bit of a slap-in-the-face culture shock and adjustment to be back amongst loads of people. I just wondered how many of you have done or had to do this when it wasn't your decision to have to move and how you felt and coped?

Thanks

What a lovely touch to be welcomed onto the private facebook page!

It sounds like the yard is thoughtful, and the liveries lovely. I guess you look at the positives, make sure your stuff is all marked up, make sure you are happy with the turnout arrangements, and be happy to share your time with others. I bet the facilities are better than your own yard?

Good Luck!

It will take some getting used to having other people around and not being able to do totally your own thing, but it couldn't still be nice, as you said no maintenance, company and advice ( only when you want it if course!)
Make the best of it and enjoy your horses.

I went back to livery with three horses after having my own yard and it was total bliss. No longer had to do yard and field maintenance. Just turning up to focus on riding and horse care was lovely. I felt as though I had my life back. It was a 60 horse yard with fab facilities and staff who were on hand so we could go away at a moments notice. There was always someone to ride with, to enjoy impromptu cometition afternoons and group outings to events, and it was so interesting having lots of horses at different stages of training around the place. In emergencies, there was often a vet, farrier, pyhsio etc coming out that health issues were dealt with more quickly and cost less in call out charges.

Although, having my own place was enjoyable, it was easy to become stale and the horses certainly enjoyed having new companions to work and socialise with. I still feel a bit guilty about just paying my livery fees and leaving the hard work to the YO, but the freedom to enjoy the best parts of ownership has been really good.

I tried it and couldnt cope!

I had enough of the field i was privately renting as it was taking up most of my time with the maintenace and cost of having someone come in and harrow, top, spray etc so i moved to a livery yard.

I then realised after 2 weeks what I was missing with not having people giving me their opinions on what i should and shouldnt be doing - things going missing, people bringing in, turning out my horse when i didnt want them to, other peoples horses getting in with mine and then not letting me take mine out of the field!

Not being able to be on the yard after a certain time in the evening... not being allowed to soak hay.. the list goes on.

obviously not the case with every yard just my personal experience! Went back to renting on my own after the end of that month and the maintenance is nothing compared to what i put up with on the livery yard!!
