as above - I have a baby (not ready to be backed just yet)... and a huge selection of dressage saddles and one GP saddle that definitely won't fit... has anyone ever backed a horse in a dressage saddle and how did it go - or do I have to go out and buy a GP just for backing my dressage baby ...:(

Not mental at all, if you are comfortable in a dressage saddle there's no reason why you shouldn't break in one! Personally I can't think of anything worse, me and dressage saddles do nit get on! I always use a racing saddle for many reasons but I'm completely comfortable on one, many people look at it and think I'm mad. Only thing I would say though is just make sure the cantle isn't too high in case you need to get off quick, that's why I love my racing saddle, so easy to slide off in an emergency.

Why not -as long as it fits and your comfortable. The saddle I feel most secure in is my dressage saddle.

Yes, I have. I was in the same situation as you, the only saddle that fitted was a dressage saddle.

Twas no problem, though the pony was a saint!

I did bareback (and show saddles for a while!)so no not crazy at all! Lol. I find dressage saddles very secure to ride in :) good luck.
