Backing my youngster

We started to back her 3 weeks ago doing plenty of long reining, lunging until she was ready to back all went well until last night my daughter got on her and she leapt forward with an almighty buck she looked like a damn rodeo horse after 3 bucks my daughter came off backwards and laid motionless on the floor......... She got up holding her hand with 2 of her fingers in a wonky direction, so after getting 5 horses in really fast we went up to A&E to find out the extent of her injuries......an xray revealed 2 broken fingers 1 of them snapped in half the other a fracture all they could do was tape them up and she has an appointment at the fracture clinic.
Fingers crossed (excuse the pun) they will heal if not she will have to have it pinned and the doctor said no riding for 6 weeks! we have an NPS show this sunday which she is determined to do but will have to see how sore she is.
 
Get the usual checks done regarding saddle/ back etc. As she's come into work she may have changed shape and caused the saddle to pinch perhaps.

Hope your daughters fingers are on the mend soon!!

ouch, i've broken a finger - they are very tricky to fix!
As for the youngster, it sounds as if she got a fright and over reacted. Take it back a step or 2 and then see how it goes.

ouch i know how she feels. i came off my mare then felt pain in my hand. my finger was curled up

i ended up leaving the A&E trip till later that evening as i thought theyd just tape it and say there was nothing they could do. BUT no i had mine wired back together as id shattered the lowere part of my finger. I had loads of pain as the wires protruded from my finger into my middle finger - it did stop me from riding as i darent hold the reins (couldnt put the reins between my ring/midde finger and didnt have enough strength to grip with my hand because of the pain.
i hope you can get to NPS - if shes adament then get plenty of painkillers down her.

sounds like your baby got a fright. how much leaning over have you done? my 3yo is wick and was a bit nervy of someone being above her. I took her out leading off an other horse so she got used to me being above her, then mum would get me on (laying over her) and walk me around the paddock as it was easy to slither off if she got a fright or started bucking.
 
honestly daisy we have taken backing so slowly with her, she was leant over for a week. We have had her since she was 5 1/2 months old but everything we have asked of her has been a bit of a battle she does pull faces & put up a resistance thats why we have taken things slowly. We wanted to back her ourselves rather than send her away maybe we should have done.
Daughter has said she will dose herself up for NPS only she wont be able to wear gloves but i'm sure that wont matter.
 
Hope your daughter's fingers heal quickly. A nasty shock for her though.

Not to tell you how to back your youngster, but we do the following with ours when getting on them for the first week or so after the initial ground work. Lunge them for a good 10 minutes so that they are a little tired. Have the ride lean over them from the mounting block. Handler leads the horse forwards (still on lunge line) keeping close to the horses's head and stops and starts a couple of times, when rider feels horse has settled slowly swing leg over to sitting in saddle but leaning forwards over neck, pat horse and talk to them so they know you are there and encourage them to look round to see the rider.
 
My daughter has gone into hospital today to have it wired they were talking about doing it under general but think they can do it under local, she is petrified.
