So yesterday my farrier and I had a conversation about just removing the back shoes, We tried this for 3 months a few years ago but where I was at the yard at the time was very stony and he didnt do well. So now I have a lovely pair of boa boots we fitted onto the back yesterday and he also walked really comfortable barefoot to the field, fingers crossed he doesnt get sore!
And hopefully still has both boots on after a canter later ???

Had she been younger and I braver, I might have pulled the fronts as well. However, she was 24/25 at the time, but still sound and in full work. At that age, "If it works, don't fix" is my mantra. I got rid of the backs because it wasn't working. She was throwing shoes, and the more holes that the farrier put in her feet to reattach them, the more frequently they fell off. The last straw was one that half-came off, and the clip went into her foot and gave her an abscess. She was the world's most miserable horse on box rest, so the shoes were gone. Screw that.

She moved so much more freely behind when they did.

I’ve been using keratex hoof hardener to help Barry out with his backs while he grows his new and improved hoof
I apply it a couple times a week and really helps him with stones as his boots are only arriving (finally) on Wednesday

my old mare was fine without hinds to start with but our yard was very stoney and she hobbled on it so i put them back on. when i stopped riding her i was at a different place with a concrete yard and took them off and she was fine all summer, i was going to take the fronts off in the winter but sadly lost her in the september
