I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and how do you deal with it,what sort of saddel to you have i was wondering if a not so forward cut one would be better?

Help!

i do when at jumping length, makes my hips hurt aswell. i ride longer (dressage length) to stretch me out abit lol. i tend to hunch when my stirrups are short. i wear a magnetic back support to help me aswell.

I get a bad back from riding, I had an injury a couple of years back where i nearly broke it, it gets really stiff after I have ridden. I tend to just try and ride long and not to hunch too much! Not much help really, sorry!

Think mine is age related !! Although its worse since my accident broke 5 ribs and so I think I am a bit like the Leaning Tower of Pisa

I have suffered from a bad back for many years. A lot of my friends who I have known since I was at school, and who still have horses also have to be careful with their backs. I think mucking out doesn't help either.

I have found that it helps me a great deal to do regular exercizes working on strengthening my core muscles, and I have tried pilates. There are books on pilates for dressage riders, which are good and do help.

My bad back is my biggest handicap, with regard to my riding. If I wasn't so stiff and worried about it 'going' I'm sure I would still be eventing, but I still have fun and do lots. I just have to be careful.

I do, apparently because I have a slightly rotated pelvis and sitting astride horses and bikes etc will force it to straighten and make it ache. I go to the chiropractor every few months and she fixes it again

Ditto 4leggedfurries. I find when im up out the saddle doing fast work or jumping i suffer. However in dressage saddle im fine. I find a prolite back support really helps.

Find a physiotherapist who rides horses and hence doesn't say 'stop riding'!!! because they know its impossible.

Also I found out that I had low core stability and I do some exercises and feel so much better. My back muscles were compensating for lack of core stability.

Mainly got pain when doing rising trot esp. up hills but gone now well virtually.
But horse riding physio's are far better in my opinion.

i second the Heather Mofatt seat saver!!! I used to suffer awful pains in my lower back and hips, and also in my knees. It has changed my life

I am painfree

Yup me too. In fact my physio has told me to stop riding until I have an MRI scan which Im currently waiting for. Think its from an old riding injury disc related, as I get a numbness in my left thigh after riding for about 1/2 hour, and back pain.

Are chiropractors any good? do you rate them? I have heard they are expensive, but if it works I may invest.

I ride in a Stubben saddle which is not the most comfy in the world, so put a HM seatbone saver on top which helps position, also have invested in a back support.

Me give up riding???........ NEVER

My chiro (who is a rider herself) recommends gentle riding as good for the back, but the mucking out and lifting are the things which aggravate back injuries. I found a course of Alexander technique lessons absolutely invaluable. Ive been lucky enough to find an Alexander Teacher who teaches riding too and have found a huge improvement since herniating 2 discs last year. I also have owned a reactorpanel saddle (hugely expensive but invaluable if you have long term problems and of course good for the horse too).
