Bad bale of hay

I'm about a quarter of a way through a new bale of hay (big rectangle bale) and still pulling out loads of brambles, and tonight I pulled bits of rubbish out too. It's also incredibly dusty and goes slimy/leaves the water black when soaked.
The supplier is supposedly very good, this is only my third bale of hay from them (new yard so new supplier)
Would you say something? I've been lucky and never had bad hay before

Loads of brambles means it was probably from the edge of the field where the grass may be less well managed, I get the odd bale like that but generally the farmer who supplies mine is happy to give another bale in the next load to make up for it, he sometimes notices a damaged area when loading and knocks a bit off the price or pops a small bale or two on to make up for it.

If you don't tell him he will have no idea and you cannot find out how he deals with a complaint, give him a chance to put things right and depending on what he does you can either find another supply or stick with him.

Thankyou. I wasn't sure if it's expected to get the odd bad bale and just suck it up or whether to say something.
The edge of a field would probably also explain bits of rubbish and stuff as well.
I will send a picture to him of some of the brambles I'm pulling out and just see what he says.

Can you use another and keep that aside to show the supplier they may change it, my guy will always collect and replace anything that is not up to standard.

yup I'd let him know :) my previous hay supplier sent me a bale full of rubbish once, when I messaged her she said it must have come from the headland and she credited me for that one (I had bought in bulk). nothing awkward about it, and I agree with BP it's a good way to find out how he deals with the feedback as it's a new supplier.

Well she had left over her half her hay this morning, which is completely unlike her!
I've sent them a message so fingers crossed they'll come out and swap it maybe. It looks ok, nice and green but is so dusty once you start pulling it apart.
The other bales I've had from them have seemed ok, bit dusty sometimes but not awful, so fingers crossed this is a one off.

They've replied to say they'll sort it on the next delivery, but it's my only bale of hay so I've asked when they're next up as I've nothing to use in the meantime as it stands. They usually come fortnightly on a Friday and last came last week but I'm hoping they might come tomorrow for me, is that unrealistic?

Can you explain that you have nothing to feed your horse? They're not mindreaders so will need to know the situation in order to act accordingly.

Bad hay isn't acceptable IMO. I've changed suppliers if they haven't been amenable to swapsies.

I had one farmer tell me as i was loading up the trailer with bales which he was throwing off his heap, the ones that caused a cloud of mould when they landed on the ground i put to one side, only 5 or 6, and at the end, told him i wasnt taking them as theyre far too mouldy, so he said angrily “get all those bales off your trailer, if you‘re not taking those ‘dusty’ ones you can’t have any!”
(the ‘good’ bales weren’t that great either tbh)

yeah, he’a still advertising his ‘top quality, no dust or weeds’ hay on donedeal..?

Lucky escape! That's one hay supplier that won't replace if inedible. What's the point of inedible hay?
