Bad breath

just looking for a bit of advice, in the past week my year old spaniel has developed a very bad breath, to the extent that it smells of a sewer ! Nothing has changed with her, and she is still on the same diet. Has anyone experienced this before? What does anyone recommend to get rid of this rancid smell. TIA
 
Sounds like a dental problem. My dog had awful breath, so I booked him in for some work under a GA. Three teeth out, £500 bill and a new personality!

He had a rock-chewing habit and his teeth must have been iffy for a while, but it wasn't until they went bad that it was obvious.

At the very least, it sounds like your dog would benefit from a 'scale and polish' by your vet.

Just noticed you dog's age. She might have a problem with a milk tooth, could even been something stuck that has rotted. A vet check would be a good idea either way.

I would also have a dental check done.Then, check around her flews...the hair on her lips could be brown stained,as a result of getting wet,food in and then bacteria multiply...if she has a lot of hair around her mouth you may want to consider having her face shaved to remove this hair.
Also,as she is a spaniel,have a look in her ears..smell them..they could also be a cause of the odor...a good ear cleaner will help in any case.

I would also suggest either a dental problem, or lip fold dermatitis can be an issue in some breeds with saggy lips such as spaniels.
May be worth a vet check to rule these out.
 
Definitely get teeth checked. If all okay I give mine oral hygiene gel once a day to sweeten her breath. Works a treat. I buy it from an online pharmacy.
 
Another for teeth checkup. My Tibbie came to us with absolute death breath (rehomed from a very elderly gent I was walking him for), first thing we did was get him checked over and my god his teeth were awful. 7 teeth later and his breath was fresh as... well, as fresh as dog breath can be :P
 
Thanks guys for your advice. We have an appointment with the vet today, so hopefully we can get it sorted😊🐾
