Bad Capped Hock

Hi everyone I wonder if you could offer some advice. There is a horse on my livery yard for sale who is just perfect for me she's beautiful. She has a capped hock from a year or two ago after banging it in the stable. The owner left it which didnt help I dont think, she now has had the hock drained 3 or 4 times. She hasnt been worked since as she is too big for the owner and she doesnt want to ride her, so she has just been turned out and brought in at night. I havent spoken to the vet yet but she is having an operation on the hock now to remove the sack I think. I just want a horse that can be ridden 3 - 4 times a week in the school hacking and occ jumping. I wanted to ask people who have knowledge on this whether she would be ok with this or would I be best to stay clear

or would you say she would be ok for what im after I think its such a shame to see a young horse doing nothing and being wasted when all I want to do is fuss her and give her a good home. Sorry for the long post everyone thanks for any advice given

Is the swelling on the back or at the sides?

Donkey has had her hocked drained twice this year following a fall out hunting, she will always now have an enlarged hock, at the sides but is sound to ride including jumping.

She has it on the back of the hock more to the top of the hock it seems to of flared up when she has knocked it. I would mat out the walls and floors of my stable which the one she is in now hasnt and I seen on ebay magnetic hock boot which I would put on her too just to try and prevent her hitting it. She is about 18hands and is a weight carrier only 5 years old the owner did a good job of breaking her by long reining her early on etc so I dont think it would take much for me to get her into work again. A few girls on the yard dont want me to have her

saying that I can find another in the sales without any problems but I think that height build etc wouldn't be cheap in the sales and they dont me ending up paying out on the leg as I wont be able to insure her for that. The owner said she would get all the work (the op) done on the insurance before me buying her and I can have her on loan first and see how we get on. I know my friends are just thinking of me but I really like her and I didnt know too much about the condition and the operation.
The owner said she has seen how I am with the horse I was loaning and knows the horse would be in good hands - as she bred her so she would still see her everyday.

she should be fine my horse capped her hock i would recommend bio flow boots as they helped loads. I have a set of magnet patched I am about to put on ebay that would be good as well. Be careful with the hock boots as it made my horses worse as they did not make them wide enough for her dutch legs.

We found the best way to deal with it was to cold hose her then put hot on it and then cold again this flushes it out. I changed my horse onto shaving as i could get a base on the bed so she did not knock it when lying down.

All in all she was fine and jumped intro level eventing and completed the Milton Keynes three day event. It was never a problem at all, just not that pretty.

She sounds like a lovely horse and at least the old owner is going to get it all sorted. If you need any advise PM me a capped hock would not put me off a horse!!!! GOOD LUCk she sounds fab

but I would rather have a horse that I like. I cant be doing with having to goto sales and travelling to view when my perfect horse is in the next stable block to me. All I would have to do is move her across the yard into my stable lazy hey

haha I will definatley speak to the vet for advice also but hearing everyone on here has made me so much better and at least when I part cash the owner can go out and get a 15 hander so she can ride.
She's great fightyourcorner she is about 18hands skewbald mare id x tb but she has her dads ( the big ) id build in her and her mums height and colour. I think I talked myself back into getting her and wont let anyone change my mind. I think I will deffo loan her first and see how we get on together.

she sounds LOVELY!! dont let people put you off if she is the right horse for you then she is the one!! A capped hock can be managed. Good luck take loads of pics would LOVE to see her and the hock in question

I agree, she does sound lovely!!!! I wouldn't worry about a capped hock either as they are generally cosmetic more than anything else. Don't listen to your friends - they are just jelous. There's no reason for the leg itself to be excluded from insurance. I am pretty sure nothing at all (even the hock) was excluded on my mares capped hock, though it wasn't very bad so maybe yours would be if it is very big (though I suppose it won't be once its drained)

Hey, I agree I went to look at a horse with capped hock, when I had it vetted the vet seemed to think it would not be a problem at all..however didn't buy horse there were other things wrong with it!

didnt get chance to ask much with the owner but I went and got her in before it went dark she was good as gold she is so tall

. I had a look at the leg the bump is the size of a tennis ball quite big but will probably be a lot smaller once its drained. I wondered is the swelling more likey to go down when she is back in work. I would of thought that moving it would help it rather than it not being worked.

Update - Just want to thank you all for your help, I got to speak the the vet who had been working on the horse and he said she will be fine to do what I want to do so I have now taken her on loan

with a view to buy - if we get on.
Now have to tackle her barging she's big and she knows it the cheeky mare

and wont get away with it now haha.
