Witnessed last night on the way to Cirencester a young lad driving a lorry full of dressage horses SWERVE in front of the path of several cars in the outside lane to overtake a lorry, all the cars were travelling faster than him and had to brake suddenly. Could have been very nasty, he got really close to the lorry and then just cut these other cars up.

He then proceeded to drive round the roundabout incredibly badly…

Please can someone give me details of this government scheme that allows young lads to get their HGV license early as it is clearly CR@P!

You cannot assume that he got his license through this scheme or even that he has a license at all?!?! was there a name on the lorry? you should prob report it to the police anyway...if there are speed/traffic cameras in the area they can prob identify it pretty easily

I followed a horsebox on the A64 heading to York Race Course on Friday doing 80!!!!!!! WTF.

They wonder why then when the horse refuses to load for the journey home.

I use the motorways extensively for my work, and this is pretty standard practice for most HGV's, box wagons, flat beds and vans these days.

I asked a friend of mine, who recently retired as a long distance HGV driver why, he said because they can! I remember not so many years ago when HGV drivers were the kings of the road, not any more.

These people may not have horses on board. Certainly doesn't excuse bad driving, but if he could throw his vehicle around like that, it sounds like he was unladen - of maybe just transporting someone's fridge/freezer for them !! ??

OK dangerous driving is dangerous driving, but when you're in a lorry and you catch something up going slower you need to just go past or you lose your momentum. Lorries and horseboxes can't just alter speed like cars can, and if you waited for a huge gap in the traffic these days you'd be waiting a bloody long time, and again you'd then have totally lost momentum. So, like it or not, that is why we pull out in front of (but not usually right in front of
crazy.gif
) cars.

Yes you can. He has a blog on HHO which mentioned the scheme and the name of his mother's dressage school was emblazoned across the lorry, I was in the passenger side of the jeep so I could see the driver very well.

oo scandle!! dizzle pm me the details!!! this isnt on! he could have caused a fatal collision and ripped families apart. there is no need for speeding or dangerous driving

Absolutely, I failed my HGV test the first time because I didn't "make progress" ie, I was on a duel carrigeway and didn't pull out into the outside lane ( because cars were coming and I didn't want to cut them up!) so I got stuck behind a gritter lorry and once I was crawling I couldn't get enough of a gap in the traffic to overtake and pick up speed again.

Far too many bad drivers on the roads today. Everyone is so stressed and rushed.

I know what you all mean but when taking a lorry test you are told to "make progress" at all times.

bit sweeping...
we regularly drive on the moterway at 70mph....

all my animals load perfectly..

it's the idiots who pootle along at 30-40 on a moterway who are a complete danger....

Bang on the nail JM, i also keep a good consistant speed when travelling mine.
It's those that tootle at low speed and need to change gears constantly who give their horses a bad ride.
I often hear people say they stick to country roads when travelling horses, i personally get on the straightest fastest roads when travelling mine as once you are up to speed, they relax and aren't being jerked around by change of speed and direction.

It was up a steep hill coming up to a roundabout so he needed to give way and thus would have lost any momentum then.

The sweve round the lorry was IMO childish boyracer driving.

I completely agree.

We were once in a 20 + car long tailback on a one-lane A road due to a horsebox doing FIFTEEN mph. I understand there may be injured horses etc, but they drove right past plenty of passing points and chances to pull over to let people past (we always do this if there is more than 3 cars behind, and often if there is just one). Even lay-bys where they wouldn't even have to stop, just drive through and allow a few past!

It was ridiculous, we were stuck in what should have been a 15minute journey, which took 45-1hr. If I was driving, I'd have followed them to whereever they were going and told them exactly what I thought of them!

Surely this is illegal? Dangerous driving and all.

Was this going up towards the Hot Air Ballon pub?
Thats an incredibly difficult hill in a horse lorry and I can see why he may have needed to pull out if he was about to lose momentum- sounds like he was maybe trying to pull out sooner but couldnt hence why he got close and had to turn sharply.

My lorry is the slowest thing on the planet up that hill but I have occaisonally have had to pass even more ancient lorries because if I get to that point between 3rd and 2nd where my revs are too high in the lower gear but my speed is too high for the flow of traffic in 3rd it's a tricky decision to make.
