Bad day!!
Poor mare this morning was very off with her breakfast, and whilst turned out went down and looking at stomach etc, signs of colic, so call the vet.

Vet comes, and gives all usual meds, and drenches etc, and discovers she has a high temperature and so sends for blood tests.
Theyve just come back, and ALL the cells, are ridiculously low. She is anemic and her red and white blood cells are 3.
He cannot say yet whether this is caused by a viral infection, which caused the colic, or whether she has bloods like this normally, which will mean more tests next week, as long as she doesnt get worse over the weekend!!
He was surprised we have been able to ride, but until yesterday she had bags of energy and very lively! So fingers crossed she doesnt have another underlying problem!!

Sorry for the winge, but feeling a bit shaken up and wanted someone to talk to!!!

Chocolate cookies for you all!

Sorry to hear your mare is off colour - it sounds as though your vet is on top of it, but if at any time before you see him again you are worried and your horses seems worse, do call him out again asap. I can't help at all I'm afraid with what may be up, but hope it gets sorted very soon. Look after her x

Thanks Angelbones! Vet came yesterday for more tests, and the bloods have slightly improved so he suspects a bad viral infection!
So she is on lots of rest and bute for the next week and should be back to her naughty self soon.
So relieved!! =D

mine suffered from an ME like recurring virus over 18 months which was triggered at the same time as he had flu/tet and wormer very close together :-OO. Has left him more prone to colics so we have a stash of bute and at the first sign he gets a single sachet, which usually nips him in the bud. We dont jab him for flu anymore on vet advice and we worm count and blood test for tapeworm.

vet recommended iron and vitamin tonic, which the horse loved! They dont make that one (Visorbin) any more I dont think, but I am sure there are similar ones.

Hopefully your horse will have a more normal one off virus episode!

Sounds like a viral infection to me. A pony where I graze was lethargic etc and it turned out she was anemic from a viral infection. Put her on iron sachets (which go in feed) and all was well within a week
