Was meant to post on Tuesday but forgot :p

I work with racehorses, and obviously we ride up a gallops, I thought I'd mention this incase people get confused :D

1st fall - a horse kicked out at my filly, who's a wimp and whips round if the horse in front swishes their tail, so she spun round and ended up half on/half off the bank at the side of the gallops. She was rearing and going backwards, I knew I had to give her her head, send her forwards and we'd have probably been alright ... but I froze. I was gripping onto the reins, which I'd somehow shortened so they were really short, and nearly pulling her backwards I was panicking(sp?) so much. I came off and she fell over, about three times as the rein went under her leg and she lost her balance, she then cantered off and I ran after her. She kept going up the gulley and I followed, 10 mionutes later we found her. I was crying where I was so worried she was badly hurt and because it was my fault she ran off and had fallen over etc. We found her on the footpath, standing with her tail stuck in a tree, with cuts on her legs which now means she on the walker, not being ridden. She was entered for a race next week and has been going well until I broke her :(

2nd fall - On my favourite boy who was being good. Cantering back down a horse ahead of us shot off the gallops, dropped his rider and galloped off, causing all the other horses to get excited and silly. Horse in front near enough stopped, but mine shot forward, realised horse in front had stopped and slammed on the brakes, jibbed to the left and I came off down his shoulder. As I fell, horse in front bucked and kicked me in the head. I remember being worried because I thought I was going to be trampled by horses behind me, and then being on my feet at the side of the gallops trying to catch my horse and realising I had some major nosebleed. I don't remember getting up off the gallops, and everyone was shouting at me to sit down but I didn't know why (I didn't realise I'd been kicked in the head and thought I was running in a straight line, but apparently I was all over the place) Long story short, got back on my horse and went home, with a face covered in blood hoping I didn't meet anyone on the way home :o I refused to ride my next lot as was fed up of riding and falling off and, to be honest, I lost my nerve a bit. I rode three lots yesterday, but was terrified the whole time, and rode today and wasn't so bad, but still froze when I thought my horse was going to do something.

So, yeah .. Tuesday was a bad day ....

You racehorse riding people are so brave! I mean that seriously! I am glad that you were unhurt after your bad day.

Takes me back to when I used to ride out, that's why I do stud work now! ((hugs)) hope you are feeling better and I totally get what you mean about being a bit windy now. I went through a bad patch where I fell off atleast once a week every week for a month or so, but it passed when the weather got better and I soon got my confidence back.

Thanks Boxers :)

SS - No I didn't go to hospital, because I'm stubborn and was determined there was nothing wrong with me no matter how much my mum protested, but yes I should have gone :p

skint - Not brave, just stupid me thinks :p :D

toomanynags - I did think that maybe that was it for riding for a while, but I like riding too much :)

MrsM - I am driving, but I'm perfectly fine now. Had a bit of a headache after it happened but I drove home slowly and sensibly :) Saw your thread about you being signed off at the clinic because your back is better, great news :D

Thanks Laafet :)

That's because you got kicked in the head!

Anyway, so sorry you had such an awful day - that's just the way it falls sometimes (pardon the pun!).

Hope you're feeling better and your confidence is back to ride out again now.

Haha that's what I thought!
I hope you are feeling better today when you ride out! You have a right to feel a tad nervous after all that... sounds way to eventful to me :(

Chellebean - thanks :) I feel absolutely fine now, though still a bit nervous but I'm sure I'll get over that soon lol

jendie - I was fine after the first fall, didn't get hurt at all so I was fine to get on the next horse :)

Be careful. A 17 yr old friend, work rider about to get apprentice licence, has already had some serious injuries. Kicked in abdomen (spleen & kidney damage), several bad falls giving her damage to her back then late last year fell off & damaged virtually all muscles down one side of her body being thrown from a yearling. She wa told the only thing that saved her from numerous broken bones was her young age, her bones are still green & pliable not hardened off yet. Still determined to be a flat jockey (yup, no jumps involved in these incidents, all on the flat), as soon as she was allowed back riding she was riding ourt 5 lots a day within a week. It is a tough career choice, you have to decide how much you want to follow it & whether it is worth the falls. Fingers crossed you get the nerves sorted, very understandable but life will be easier when they are under control.

Hiya, I don't want a career with racehorses, I just have a job with them lol. Not interested in becoming a jockey, I just enjoy riding them at home and taking them to the races :)
