Hi all

Just wondered if any one had any ideas/had the same problem?? My boy is on box rest for inflammed sole and since he has been in (nearly 2 weeks) he has really bad diarrhoea

Had the vet out Monday (well had xrays on foot last Weds so asked about it then and vet thought it might have just been the change from being out during the day to being in full time) as it hadn;t got any better - more like worse I got the vet again Monday to take bloods and a sample.

Had some blood back and all looks fine - still waiting for the sample and other bloods - but I'm getting really worried as he is really gasey and liquid just coming out so he;s so uncomfortable - I clean him up morning and night but its getting worse - so . . .

. . . I called the vet again this morning and he said we really need the other results back before we can go any further so as I'm such a worrier I thought I'd see if any of you have had the same problem???

I started him on Pink Powder just over a week ago to see if that helps and he is only getting small scoop of Dengie Healthy hooves and Purple Horse hage In small quanties as he a bit of a fatty in a small hole haynet - and this is what he always has so no change in diet bar coming in off the field.

Sorry for such a rambling note but rush typing!!

Thanks in advance

there are a lot of horses on our livery yard ATM that have the same type of diarrohoea and they are very loose. We have put it down to some rather rich haylage and last night I had to wash Baileys tail and then his bum and apply barrier cream as he was all messy with it. He also gets stomach spasms when he passes the liquidy stuff and stomps his back legs up and down. I have cut down a little on the haylage as he is looking rather porky ATM so i am going to keep an eye on the situation. He has recurrent colic attacks (gassy colic) so he has been on pink powder for many, many months. It won't stop colic or diarrohoea but it will minimise any effects of these problems.

He has 20% scar tissue damage on his lungs so can;'t have hay unless its soaked - which I was doing as initially Vet thought foot may have been lami - but he wouldn't eat it - so I went back to my bagged haylage which he always has when the Lami was ruled out.

Thanks anyway

Hi RyanJoker,

Just a thought, but maybe your boy's stressed being kept in when he's not used to it? My mare can get diarrhoea with a 'drop of a hat' when she's stressed out.

Could be worms? Emergence of cyathostomes can cause diarrhoea at this time of year. Not related to box rest or anything but just a thought?

My boy had runny pooh's whilst he was on box rest. He was fed haylage also. I mixed it with a bit of hay which seemed to help. He is now out in the day and in at night with haylage and it has dried up to normal pooh's now!

I had yakult or natural yogurt suggested to me to try him on to see if that helped but didn't try it.

maybe do half half soaked hay and hayledge give him some high fibre nuts along his normal feed try the higest dosage as poss of pink powder. his he wormed? hopefully the bloods come back with good results!
