Bad experience on walk yesterday

Hi Snowy, I have two chi's and I am one of the "dreadful" owners who now "molley coddles" their dogs. I am so sorry to hear you have had problems. I haven't read all replies. All I can tell you is I now plan my walks and my times, and yes, I pick my boys up if in doubt. I live in a lovely sea side town, that unfortunately has a high population of numpty dog owners, not all, some are lovely, but when your dogs are the size of the average mouthful, care has to be taken. Do what ever is right for you and yours. x

Could you walk with a walking stick? Not suggesting you need one but it ism a mor discrete "weapon" than say carrying a riding whip. If I had a small dog I'd probably carry something similar to defend my dog. We had a nasty incident the other day, walking my two off lead in a country park and came across a pair of very young off lead tiny dashaunds, my two were trotting just at my heels and within 6ft of us then littl ones turned tail and bolted towards the main road. It really made me realise just how vulnerable little dogs can feel.

I own a papillon and she has been attacked by a German Shepherd and it was only her very thick coat on that saved her. So now I am wary, I try and avoid big dogs when possible and I'm very cautious about where I walk her...

Sorry, only just come back to this thread but thank you for all the replies. We haven't had any further problems and Mia has been fine, no anxiety at all. I haven't met many dogs on our walks lately because I am staying close to home and there aren't many people around here but I am feeling more confident again and will probably take my walking stick out as suggested if we go somewhere that I think we will meet dogs we don't know.
