Bad experience with farrier!!

Scrooge, how am I over reacting when I have just stated what happened and asked you all if this is normal? Re read my original post! Yes I have made it clear i do not like it and have told you how my mare reacted. Again, I wouldn't say that's over reacting.

I agree with you that I should practise more with my horse and I will def consider keeping the farrier for the same reason. Thanks for the advice.

No, I was agreeing with you that FARRIER was over reacting!! :D Sorry fingers too cold for typing today :)

Sometimes horse do take the pee and need telling off which works for some and not other. As the farrier then was nice to her and he does a good job I would keep him at the moment and see what happens next time.
I once had a farrier who squeezed and squeezed my horses tendon until he picked up his leg then continued squeezing it until my horse was buckling on the other leg . He then dropped it and my horse fell and he kicked him to get up. This was a 5 year old horse. I told him to leave even though he had only taken 2 shoes off. I reported him to the farriers council who came out to check my horse. They reccommended another farrier who had no problem. It was my word against his so no action was taken.

Carthorse that's awful! That's why I think I should try him again because thre are worst out there! And hopefully he will respect my wishes now and be nicer!

Horses have to stand for the farrier. I would be mortified if any of mine injured the farrier, I already have the embarrassment of my gelding having advisories on his vet card for injections :o He has to be twitched for any injections or we all get flattened :o

If your mare is funny with her feet then its up to you to sort that out and work with her :) If she istn doing anything then yes his behaviour isnt acceptable, A slap on the shoulder or tummy gets the youngster to stand up straight as she gets bored and leans, other than that shes great to shoe.

Yes, the farrier may have overreacted, and probably should not have been that aggressive.

But I must ask OP, where were you in all of this? Why did it take until the horse had reared and nearly squashed the farrier for you to step in?

It is not the farrier's job to discipline the horse, it is the job of the owner to make sure the horse is well behaved, and be on hand to discipline if necessary. You should have been there to tell your mare off on her first rude action. Then the situation would probably not have escalated.

I'd be mortified if my horse reared and endangered a farrier.

If you want trimmers and farriers to tend your horse, you must ensure that the horse is trained to behave.
Also, talk to these people. Communication is two or more people sharing and UNDERSTANDING an idea.

It is your job to teach the horse to behave. While what your horse did was not drastic to your eye, the horse may have made a crafty, sharp tiny movement that suggested to the farrier it was about to do something pretty nasty.
You need to talk to the farrier, and agree a way to discipline in the future.
I do not think what the farrier did was drastic, but it should be you disciplining the animal not him, however if he feels his safety is at risk,a quick jerk reaction may be the reason he reacted as he did.
Horses can be very crafty, and it maybe the horse reacted in a way you couldn't "read" but the farrier did.

Did he remain calm after you protested?
Years ago a new farrier lost it with my horse (who was being a bit naughty) I was really upset and eventually found my voice and told him to stop (im ashamedly shy!)
Well turns out he was the best farrier ive ever ever had and from that day everything was fine. It wasn't brought up until about a year later when we laughed about it and he apologised.
