Hi everyone

I've been back riding since the new year - 20 years ago I last rode! My knees are quite painful ( old rugby injury) after long hacks, hunt rides especially bad! I also lost my stirrups a couple of times today!

I'm thinking of getting the flexi- stirrups with so called cheese graters for extra comfort and grip!

Any suggestions on which ones as I've seen some for £30 and some for £140!! What is the difference ! Any recommendations for a new rider which will help!

Somebody told me to try the Mountain horse Sc3 system boots/ stirrup combination! Any views?

Any suggestions greatly received

Thanks

Try the mark Todd aluminum/carbon type ones with wide footbase, they're the only ones I can ride gallop work in without my ankles buggerng up! Think they were £35? But thorogood do a copy I think which were about 25? Might be worth a look?

My suggestion would be to try some first, for two reasons. One depending on your knee injury they could be worse (they massively help me but hurt my friends hubby's knee) and second I have a friend who feels really unstable in them, particularly jumping.

I got the £30 ish ones but never had the more expensive so cannot tell you the difference.

The losing the stirrups is more likely due to tension in the thighs lifting you away from them or stirrups are too long (or a comb of the two). If you are very recently back in the saddle I would give it a while before changing much until your body is used to it again.

I hope I haven't been too patronising or anything :) Good luck, I feel your pain!

I've had both! I bought some bow balance stirrups and thought they were good - but quite heavy and my saddle is also heavy so I wanted to lighten the load for my poor horse!. I read great reports on here about Reflex Stirrups so I bought a pair for £20 on ebay and have used them ever since. I think they're great. I used to get sore knees at the end of long hacks, but haven't had any knee pain at all since using them. Beware though - some big retailers have cottoned on and are charging £32.50 for them. I recommended them to a friend recently and she found them here at a reasonable price http://www.happytack.co.uk/german-pfiff-black-reflex-shock-absorber-stirrups-332-p.asp

I used to get bad knees & ankles riding, but not since getting my flexi stirrups, i just got the cheap ones from Ebay, not had any problems with them as yet.

I got a cheap set off ebay when -cost about £20 and the have reduced the pain/discomfort in my knees and ankles when I ride with shorter stirrups.

I have the sprengers! Fabulous, I found myself with sore/stiff ankles even while hacking and got these and they're fab. I only go back to 'normal' stirrups for showing as I have natural basic turnout.

I have a pair of Sprengers they are fantastic, I have collapsed arches in my feet so my knees ache badly... Sprengers are fab especially when hunting and jumping.

Be aware though I had a pair of cheese grater type Mountain Horse treds and the boots that matched, fell off and my foot was caught in the stirrup because of the cheese grater design, if the horse I came off of wasn't so well behaved I'd have easily been dragged if it spooked and ran off...
