hi every1 equitas leg is on the mend here are some befour and after pics the good news isthat if it keeps healing this well she can be turned out in 4 weeks and possibly ridden in 6 yipppeeeeee x
OMG you poor things what happened? I've had to deal with something like this recently, you must be doing the right thing it looks lovely and clean and a good vertical cut (which I've learnt from experience close the quickest), something to do with blood supply!! I hope you've both got over the shock. I'd thoroughly recommend itrasite gel to start and once the edges start closing Bio Oil is fantastic for keep the scaring supply and to a minimum (expensive but it goes a long way and well worth it). You'd hardly guess the extent of the injuries my girl had now - very minimum scaring. Good luck and keep us up to date. Please feel free to pm me it you need some moral support, but I think 6 weeks is very optimistic I would have said closer to 10 - but I'm known for my patience!
Don't bank on the six weeks - my mare did the same thing and it took 3 months - once they are allowed to start moving about again the new tissue often tears. Be patient and dont rush it.
Thanks eveyone....vet is coming out every 48hrs so the cleanness is nothing to do with me poor mare is coping so well and girls on the yard are being helpful 2 there is at least 1 horse kept in with her at all times as she kicks the door and we dont want anymoor accidents..... x
it wasnt barbed wire altho there is some dotted around other paddocks i would never have let her near the stuff it was just plane wire which is bad enough but being stupid and anxious to have her go out for a few hours i turned out with it and this is the result .....yeah she has changed it now for electric rope which is much better but claimes it was my fault for tuning out which i guess it was really ...
I saw your original post and was horrified. I am SO pleased for you and her that she seems to be healing. Fingers crossed she continues to make good progess and well done you for being a super nursey mummy and giving her all she needs. Big pat on the back to you both
The other thing I would recommend you getting is a neck cradle. As the healing starts it begins to itch. My girl kept opening hers back up until I got a neck cradle. I also found that when I started riding her again I needed to put the neck cradle back on afterwards. I think the increased blood flow caused a bit of pressure in the newly formed skin and without the neck cradle she would reopen it. Don't try to rush things it took me a good 4-5months before I could re-introduce gradual work. Good luck and keep us up to date.
Maybe your time scale is a little optimistic, but it should heal fine.
My now 26yr old mare had a similar type of injury several years ago. It looked like someone had taken a machete just below her hock, then pulling all the skin down like sock! She managed to severe the tendons too all round the front.
She was stabled for 6 months whilst it healed, dressing changes daily for the first 2-3 weeks and then alternate days.
The best thing I had (home made) was a neoprene support bandage that I could put over the dressing to hold them all in place (saved a fortune in Vetwrap!). She was as good as gold the whole time.
Despite the tendons being severed she has control of the toe, and even now at her age, unless you lunged her on a 10m cirle you wouldn't know she wasn;t a 100% sound.
The wound is looking fantastic Keekee. I saw your previous thread but was rushing out the door so couldn't reply.
One of my foals injured himself and had similar (but obviously smaller) wound. His healed perfectly and now a number of months on, you cannot even see the scar anymore. He was never unsound during his injury however he, thankfully, never severed any tendons.
Skin just blows me away - it is quite incredible at the rate of which it repairs itself. I personally wouldn't be surprised if you are out riding her within the timescale your vet gives you ... providing you don't have any setbacks. Good luck and I am looking forward to hearing about you riding her again!
Re Britestar....I know its rude but how much was your vets bill im really worried because she goes to hydrtherepy next week and they have told me i need to pay them upfront then let insurance settle up with me whereas the vet just lets me weight till they get a cheque....nightmare..
Re ..Tia thanks for your kind words will keep you posted and hope to be back on her soon iv not ridden her properly for nearly 4 months as she had a tendon issue b4 this......
I can't really remember the total costs, as she wasn't insured and didnt have anything like hydroptherpy. Also I did all my own dressing changes, so the vet only came for the 1st three days for IV crystapen. I was lucky as well as at that time I had access to all my dressings at cost through my partners Pharmacy.
I think the total including all the dressings was somewhere in the region of £750.
Mr favourite dressing was called Sorbsan, a calcium alginate fibre which I could pack into the wound to absorb the exudate, but came away cleanly at the next change.
