Last few months he's been struggling a bit with his back end, vet wasn't too concerned as he's your typical accident prone greyhound, figured he had tweaked something.
Last week he suddenly had a huge lump, weakness in his back legs and his spine was sticking up, vet thought slipped disc so he went in for xrays this morning to rule out anything else before an MRI. Xrays show aggressive bone cancer in his spine that has already eaten away at alot of the bone and at this point isn't reversible/treatable as the damage is done 😞 he's 8 years old.
He's coming home for as long as he's comfortable on painkillers, he's still eating/drinking and running around the place. You honestly wouldn't think anything is wrong with him except for the odd stiff stride but apparently he's got a few months tops before its either spread and causes significant problems elsewhere or damages a nerve and causes paralysis.
Obviously as soon as he's showing signs that he's uncomfortable or in pain he will be put to sleep.

You all helped me find him nearly 7 years ago, so thank you all. Hopefully he has a blast in his final days and we are going to make sure he lives life to the full and gets spoilt rotten.

What devastating news :( I am so sorry. Spoil him rotten and cherish every moment you have left together. When his time comes let him go with dignity, surrounded by the family he loves and who love him. No dog could ask for more. Thinking of you x

so sorry to hear this..3 weeks ago i lost my lurcher who had arthritis in her hips and we couldnt keep her comfortable with pain killers so i had to make that decision...for the last few days i spoilt her as much as possible so know how you feel. hope you manage to keep him enjoying life and know that you will be doing the right thing when the day comes....its never easy and i am struggling to come to terms with it still....

He's home, still a bit groggy from the GA and lifting 40kgs of XL greyhound in and out of the car boot is interesting bless him!
Back in a week for a checkup. Little sister knows something's up, she keeps hugging him. She's only 3, he's been around her whole life, she's going to be devastated 😞

i thought my collie cross would be really bad as she was the younger one and had never been on her own and i had resigned myself to getting another dog straight away even though i didnt want to. i had the vet come to the house and my collie saw her once she had gone and hardly really looked, was more interested in talking to the vet. she didnt seem to miss her at all and didnt look for her indoors or in the garden. she was looking behind on the first few walks as she had never walked on her own before and always followed my other one, but she was fine after a couple of days as i made sure i met my friends with their dogs to help her get over it. if you let your younger one see the body she may react the same as mine. hope you will have some quality time with him....

Human little sister not canine 😁

He does have a canine little bro who hero worships him, but he lives with my nan so shouldn't be too hard on the little guy hopefully. They've been the oddest pair, overgrown greyhound and jrt x Chihuahua...

oh, my experience is no help then.....hope little sister will understand when the time comes...

OMG my heart goes out to you, that is the dread that I have for one of the Greyhound Gang.....and I know statistically it is a matter of time before I have to experience it :(

Bone cancer is one of the most excruciatingly painful diseases that a dog can suffer from, so I hope you can keep him comfortable and enjoying life until you know the time is right. Having seen a lurcher on Tramodol who was suffering from bone cancer I know that quality of life is paramount, but I am absolutely sure you know that too.

Thinking of you and Barney tonight, the Greyhound Gang send appropriate snuffles :) :) xx

I didn't realise how common it is in greyhounds his age, they are such a healthy breed (accidents aside!) and he never even raced so bone issues/cancer were the furthest thing from my mind. It's crazy how fast its done so much damage too. Wasn't what the vets were expecting to see either so they were fairly shocked at the extent of it, have said take things day by day. They were advising us on conservative treatment for slipped discs this morning before the xrays because we were unsure about putting him through surgery if that was the problem as he's a complete drama queen.

Its just ****, he should have another 10 years bombing around the place and getting into trouble. I honestly thought it would be him eating something stupid that got him in the end because he's that daft ... Not this.

Yep it is shockingly common, and as you say it is very very fast acting. Such a vile horrible disease :( :( :(

Less than two weeks post diagnosis and he's being PTS tomorrow afternoon. Lump doubled in size over the last few days and its causing neurological problems so he's struggling to lie down/stand up and he's shaking when he's standing, catching his back paws up steps etc

😢

thinking of you, you have done all you could and will be doing the kindest thing for him tomorrow. lost my lurcher on 26th sept and its still very raw but although i miss her dreadfully (and am tears again now) i know it was the right thing for her but one of the hardest i have ever had to do..hope all goes ok tomorrow...hugs...

Won't make it til tomorrow, sitting with him at the vets after having to carry him in. His legs just went completely and he's in a huge amount of pain pretty much instantly. 😞 we wanted to avoid this but its come on so quickly. Horrendous. It will be over shortly though ...

I'm so very sorry for you :( I had my old girl PTS a few weeks ago and it was heart breaking. I still sometimes call her and look for her thinking I havent seen her for a while and wondering where she is. But I dont regret it for a second. I got sedatives for my girl before I took her in, and I had my lovely dog back for a little while. It made me sure it was time and she was ready. It was incredibly peaceful and I dont have to worry anymore that shes suffering or unhappy. I miss her and will probably always miss her, but a month in I am now able to start thinking about the lovely dog she was before she got ill.

I hope its peaceful for you tomorrow and you can take comfort in the fact you have prevented any suffering. I'll be thinking of you xx
