Bad news for owners of horseboxes

I didn't think this was anything new anyway? I used to have a lorry without skirts or anything down the side and it had to have these barrier things fitted years ago to get it through it's test. I sold it over 2 years ago, so this must be older than that?
 
I have been in touch with VOSA and they tell me that this only applies to vehicles registered in 1984 and after. Vehicles registered before 1984 are exempt.
The press release from VOSA, which Horse and Hounds quoted on Page 7 of the 22 April 2010 edition releted to lorries with Hi-Hab cranes, which must have the break in the side panels or rails of their vehicles (where the legs come down to stabilise them) widened to 130mm instead of 25 mm as a result of a Health and Safety requirement to prevent people trapping their hands.
Confirmation can be obtained from the VOSA expert Mr Richard Underwood on 01792 454245 who has been inundated by calls since the press release in Horse and Hounds.

I doubt many lorries will be caught by this, and it is a relatively simple alteration to make for those that are.

Side rails are fine, for whoever it was that said they weren't, it is the distance from the road surface that matters.

I think peternatt needs to think before he posts about lorrys he isnt always right !!!!!
There has been a rule about sidegaurds for a long time Ie the horizontal bars under a lorry body, I would think it is that some very old lorrys from the70s/80s were never fitted with them and now they need to be retro fitted with them or skirts which serve the same function to be deemed safe in this risk averse modern world....

I misinterpreted the H&H article, I read it as a continous protection from the bodywork down to 550mm from the groud (like skirt). It appears that many people have not fully understood it as the VOSA man has had numerous calls.

Your personal attack on me was and remains unnecessary....a simple clarification of my misinterpretation would have been more helpful and not caused offence and subsequent arguement....or if you want to keep it in the playground "you started it". And I am now ending it - lets keep this post to the facts of VOSA enforcement and if you have anything else to say, learn how to use your PM's!!!!

One wonders how many of those calls were generated because of your misinterpretation though?


I didn't see a personal attack on you - certainly not using the sort of language you used! I just read back and found the "irresponsible" comment. That's not a personal attack. Toby_zaphod and I both clarified and corrected your "misinterpretation" and it was after that you went off on one.

btw, resorting to PMs using the sort of language and insults you used on here would not be any more acceptable than posting those comments on the forum.
 
Think it will affect owners of old builds mainly (TKs and Leylands) who's chassis are higher. coachbuilt lorries with low lockers are OK

Not much. Our box went in for it's MOT and we were told we needed bars and handed a copy of the official details.

Geez folks, calm down, it's just a few side bars on lorries that are too old to have anything to 'fill the gap'
I think mrhsaddler and a few other people have given accurate replies.

HELP!! im sooo confused!! i cant seem to find out what my lorry is suposed to have or not to have!!

NOW is it meant to be lower in its body than 55cm( i thnk i got that bit)!!!

and if so, (dont think mine is, was reg in 1994) when it passed its mot last week when i took it in, should vosa have told me!!!

AND>> if they didnt tell me,, does that mean im ok???????????????

Mine is the old style wooden box; Its a fantastic lorry;
I've just been out to measure it and its around 250cm from the road!!
Plaiting is due end of August, I probabley won't be able to afford the adjustments to it, not unless we have a windfall anyway.
For heavens sake, can't they just leave us alone, its been fine for the last 20 years
 
jeez, knickers in a twist springs to mind... and i'm not talking about the lorry stuff! what's got under people's bonnets today? fwiw i interpreted it in the same way as JoG, she merely said what she thought. she didn't say she was the Man From VOSA. let's all chiiilllll....

now, who's going to tell me if mine is okay? and where i have to measure?
