Sorry it's long, but I just need to get it out!
Shadow went for his MRI in relation to the diagnosis of navicular.
I picked him up last night and once he was loaded vet gave me a run down of the findings. It is the worst possible outcome.
The MRI shows extensive damage to the navicular bone and coffin joint. Subsequently the coffin is inflammed and pinching the tendons. In his right fore (Which was the 'best' on his xrays in October) the odema is full thickness and large fragments of bone have totally come away. The same is now happening in his left, the vet says the only way he can describe the findings is "horrible".
Basically this is the end of the road for my boy.
The vet I spoke to was very good with me, and basically told it like it was which I am very appreciative of, Ispent a year being told by other vets just to ride him through it and get on with it "he might grow out of it".
He must be in a great deal of pain now, although he looks ok as he is equally lame all round (if that makes sense). So I'm upping his pain meds and turning him back out when I get my head around what now has to happen.
He is the sweetest, handsomest and most loving young horse I've ever met (his fourth birthday was just last week). I am totally devastated and just don't know what I will do when the time comes. I've had him since he was 16 months and had him when my other horse was put to sleep at just 13 years for a brain tumour.
Sorry, I know there are lost of people going through similar stuff and don't want to sound so sorry for myself but I am totally heartbroken.

OMG you poor thing, what horrible news and poor Shadow, that must be really painful. What has the vet said to do for the future? Sending good luck vibes [[[[[[[[[]]]]]]]]]]]

Yes there are others going through the same thing, but that does not mean you need to feel that your are feeling sorry for yourself. It is the worst thing to loosing a family member & always worse when they are so young. Very sorry to read your sad news. When we losted Spice we planted a tree in her memory.

What sad, sad news. Poor Shadow and poor you. Please don't apologise for being heartbroken - we all would be in your situation. Lots of hugs.

Oh you poor thing what sad news, I really do feel for you and you shouldn't be sorry, we all care even if we don't know you. Big HUGS........

You poor thing, of course you are heartbroken. Can't say anything much just offer hugs. I hope the support you will undoubtedly get from the forum will help in some way. x

So sorry to hear your awfull news, I can't imagine how hard this must be for you. Sounds like you have given that horse some very good years. ((((((hugs))))) to you.

Very sorry to hear this news, you have every right to feel sorry for yourself and your boy, how nice to hear of a vet telling you straight though.

Oh no what awful news, dread to think what you must be going through at the moment. You have every right to feel sorry for yourself, he sounds like he is very lucky to have someone who loves him so much.

Big hugs xx

Really sorry to hear your horrible news - don't ever feel bad for feeling sorry for yourself; you have every right too.
Thinking of you

We are all here for you and will support you when the time comes. This will be the worst part - the waiting and decision making. You are going through the most awful pain that most of us have had, or will have at some time and I am so very sorry. Lots of positive vibes coming your way xx

Just to add my voice to those saying that you have every right to be sad and to receive others' good wishes and take comfort from them.

So sorry to hear about this and I wish you strength for the future.

We all understand how terrible it must be to make such a dreadful decision. Truely very sad, especially as he's so young. Just try to make his time really nice for him (lots of nice food and hugs etc.) which'll hopefully make you feel a bit better about it because you can give him a proper send off. xxx

I am so sorry that's awful news to accept.
I would say the longer you put it off the worse you will feel, so try and be a good owner and make an appointment soon.
He sounds to be in a lot of pain and no chance of improvement at all even with time.
I have never heard of such a young horse getting it this badly, and would suggest you try and discover why, as it may help other owners in future.
If you had him since that early an age there may be a clue somewhere which would make losing him easier to know you have helped other horses in future.
Has he been stabled a lot? I feel navicular is not just to do with wear and tear but the circulation in the foot, and for that reason all our horses get turfed out most days regardless of the weather..
For now all I can say is sorry, you don't have to apologise for feeling sad, anyone in your position would be upset.

that's devastating for you both and you have every right to feel upset and that its unfair- i know i would. sending hugs to you and your boy

What terrible news, such as shame especially when he is so young. ((Hugs)) to you, can't imagine how you must be feeling.
