Totally agree, we have had similar expereinces to your postie one.
Normally even a complete stranger can walk in the house when we invite them in, I guess the dogs can tell from our behaviour if we are comfortable?
We have a stairgate about a metre away from our front door. It protects arriving post and keeps the dogs back when we open the door to strangers. Once a particularly insistent door to door salesman attempted to block my husband closing the front door on him by placing his foot in the door and trying to push it back in again.
Big dog jumped up on the stairgate (so pretty much face to face level with cheeky salesman) and gave a few angry warning barks. He skidaddled.
They do have a strong guarding instinct and they are so so loyal- that needs to be kept in mind, but then that goes back to responsible ownership like everyone has said.
