Hi we have been treating my daughters pony, on the vets advice I might add, with bloodroot cream. It's a rage one on his neck which is right over the jugular vein. His is why vet w reluctant to go straight for liverpool cream. Anyway, we used it as instructed and after the first 7 dy course the skin went all brittle and tarted to break off, then 5 days into the second lot of treatment, the whole site swelled up and looked totally disgusting! It looked like the sarcoid was disintegrating. Vet came out and said to stop using the cream and prescribed bute for 5 days to reduce inflammation. That was Tuesday and all the swelling has long gone but the site in and around the sarcoid is all scabby and scaly. I've to ring he vet on Wednesday and tell him what it looks like before he decides what's next. Has anyone else had this reaction to bloodroot? It must be quite toxic I guess?!

Yes, my mare had exactly this reaction on a sarcoid in front of the girth. In the end it was a steaming bloody mess and what looked like a small egg came out, which was the root of the sarcoid. Took ages to heal, but is just a small bare patch of skin now, with no sarcoid. That was at least 5 years ago, so stick with it!

Thank you I feel a bit better about it now! He's being so good too which makes me feel worse but as long as there's a good chance it will get rid of the blasted thing it will be worth it. He's got a big flap of skin hanging down just now so I will phone the vet again tomorrow and ask if I should just leave it alone still. Going to be a long process most likely. Good job we don't want to show him!

I used it on the side of his mouth for 7 days. It produced a raw, bleeding, bloody mess. Horrendous but vet said to use aloe vera cream to get it to heal.
Worth doing as 4 years later still OK but it looked really really horrible at the time.

Spoke to vet again yesterday as he asked me to update him. The wound is looking much better and the big flap of skin that the cream burnt off has dropped off!! Disgusting!! I have now to put dermisol cream on to heal the wound up as he said the effects of the bloodroot will have finished working by now. So will keep everything crossed that the little blighter is all gone and will wait for the othe on his sheath to erupt before treating that. I must say if this bloodroot cream has worked, it was far cheaper and much less painfully than using he liverpool cream!

Why do you think Bloodroot is less painful than the Liverpool Cream OP?

Just out of interest, as I have seen both used.
My other horse had liverpool cream treatment 2 years ago for some small sarcoids on her belly and after the second treatment she became very upset when the vet came to apply the lat 3 treatments to the point where we had to twitch her or she would have killed us both! It was horrible and very upsetting for me and the horse who is by nature usually very easy going and kind so I assume it was very painful for her? My daughters little horse has been absolutely fine with the bloodroot cream even though it appears to have had the same effect as liverpool cream. He is not as good natured as the other one either!!

Strange isn't it! My mare was treated with Liverpool cream as a 2 year old and didn't make the slightest fuss about it! Because of the position they thought they would have to sedate each time, but no, she just stood resting a hindleg!

A friend treated with the bloodroot cream and it made far and away a worse mess on her mare than the liverpool cream did on mine. Maybe it was operator skill ;)
