Bad reactions to Cartrophen??

Hiya guys, a quick question on behalf of a friend who's horse is receiving Cartrophen injections for a tendon sheath injury...

Has anyone's horse had a particularly nasty reaction? The mare had an injection into her chest and it blew up into a massive abcess type mess (they suspected because of dirt in the wound as is a typical risk with any injection) so she had the second injection into her hind quarter (her rump!) and it has had exactly the same reaction

Further investigation into these abcess type reactions has shown that neither of them are actually a 'true abcess' despite the gungy puss type flair up....

Has anyone any similar experiences or possible remedies?? Obviously the horse is under close observation with the vet who is speaking directly to Cartrophen about this- but neither professional body has ever known this type of reaction before

Hi, not horse related, but had Cartrophen injections for my dog to treat arthritis and she reacted very badly to them. Had to stop after 3 as each time she was very subdued and just lay in a corner shivering. The last one she had, she looked so poorly that at one point in the evening I actually thought she had died!
 
Yes a horse which i previously owned had a simlar reaction. He had the jab in his rump and after 4 days he developed a high temperature and I called the vet. The injection site was really sore and he had a nasty abscess which was v painful. He was given a antibiotic injection and my vet put a drain into the abscess which i had to clean each day. My vet also reported the reaction. We put it down to dirt on the needle and luckily the following 3 injections were fine. The injections had a positive effect and my horse came sound not long after the course was complete.
 
Both my old boy and Archie have had cartrophen and had no reaction. When my vet gave Archie his first injection he went nuts and was kicking the trailer to pieces trying to bite us etc whcih really isn't like him - had all his nerve blocks, x-rays and treaments with no sedation as he's so good for the vet. We had a locum do the second injection so I warned him and he injected him in the chest in case it was because he has quite a lot of muscle in his neck which can make it painful and he was fine. The following jab was done by my vet and I told he was good having it in his chest and he said he doesn't do it there unless he really has to as there is a much greater risk of reaction if you put it in the chest. This doesn't explain the reaction in the rump but it might help explain what happened with the chest?
 
FB had 4 jabs in all. The first 3 in the LHS of his neck and the last one blew up into a big hot lump. It didn't seem to bother him too much and went down gradually - though when he sweats now I can still see where it was..
Did the 4th jab in the RHS of his neck, (away from the lump!) and it was fine..

Just the luck of the draw with jabs I think, that the odd one gets infected.
