schooled my boy this morning, and basically lost my temper....long and short of it is he doesn't want to go forward or move off from the leg, always been the same had him since 4 now 12yrs!! i kept asking to move away from my leg, was doing leg yeilding, bit of half pass nothing too demanding and its like hitting a brick wall, subsequentley i lost my temper and booted him...several times which just made him go bonkers(as usual) after we had both calmed down i preceeded with his work and he went beautifully, so my question is why does it take me to loose my temper for him to get off and in front of my leg???? and now i'm going to feel bad for the rest of the day

Perhaps you have trained him to feel that nothing bad happens if he ignores the leg ?
If it did the trick I wouldnt feel bad about giving him a pony club kick to get him going. In fact I would probably do it sooner next time so he know you mean business. Horses are very good at sensing your bottom line !

Firstly don't feel bad, secondly I don't think booting him about a bit amounts to abuse of any kind. Sounds like it's exactly what he needed. It's not a nice feeling to lose your temper but once you're not abusing, hurting or being unfair to him - which from reading your post I don't think you are at all - a couple of boots sounded like just what he needed.

Once you allow him to go forward from a kick, then it's a kick to say wake up. If you had said you held him in your hand and smacked when you lost your temper that would be worse and cruel but once he's allowed to go forward that's a schooling corrrection.

Don't feel bad, put it behind you, no harm done, sounds like he needed it, and move on. He won't remember you losing your temper just try to kick him forward without losing your temper the next time.

Argghhh sometimes it feels like they are being obtuse on purpose! It might just be that nudges and sqeezing feel so "normal" that a pony club boot is what is needed to wake him up and once he wakes up engagment etc comes more naturally for him.

(have to just add - and if you've seen my post you'll know why - I presume there are no physical problems that cause him to not work properly?)

ha,read my post from mon eve!! i was asking if i shud cut my mares legs off(didnt mean it obv,luv her2 bits). But i had a really bad session wiv her mon eve, shes the opp 2 urs and just wants 2 go fast and furious at mo,even in school. I felt very guilty after working her hard. BUT lets be honest,NO ONE or NO horse is perfect!! we a ll have our bad days, and as long as we love them 99%of the time, then thats a god thing!

i didn't today, infact since he's come back from his short break i haven't used them at all, trouble is i used to wear them all the time even hacking and when i didn't use them he was terrible so i thought i'd bring him back and start off with none and maybe only use them for schooling.
