I am travelling my bad traveller soon. She sweated up on the last trip she took a while ago.

Question is about rugging her. She is currently rugged again due to the crazy weather! Should I leave the rug on for the trip (all day on the lorry) or take it off?

If she does sweat up will it be better to have the rug on or if it's off I'm worried she might catch a chill?
It's a lighter medium weight mark Todd turnout if that makes any difference.

Thanks

Why not travel her in a lw cooler? That way she won't get hot under it but if she sweats up through travelling she won't get a chill.

Hi hun, is your horse clipped?? how long is the journey?? or is it a horsebox or trailer? personally would travel her in a cooler if she is clipped, or no rug if she is not clipped and sponge her down and walk her off untill she is dry and back to normal temputure then rug her up after. hope that helps, maybe a friend could lend you a cooler rug which is a light weight fleece xx:)

I would not travel in a turnout rug, on a long journey she will get very uncomfortable if she sweats up. As she is not clipped I would leave her naked and pop a fleece on when she gets to the other end, she will probably sweat less that way and be less stressed, you need to check her on the way so offer water and plenty of hay she should relax the further she goes.

Apart from sweating what else does she do when you travel her. Does she load well and how does she unload.

Do you ever give her anything to help her travel.

I would not put a rug on her, horses can get very hot when in a lorry, less air going through than that in a trailer.

I'll leave the rug off. I'm having a professional transport company move her so I am sure she will be hayed and watered!

She gets a calmer before she travels and she loaded ok last time. She unloads quickly but ok.

She doesn't kick much or anything just shifts about and calls.

It depends on weather on day of travel, on a really hot day it is best to have as much ventilation as possible, send her with a light cooler rug [also passport], but let her go on a lorry without a rug on.
She will settle in if there are others on board, it sounds as though she is not a really bad traveller, just a bit unsure of herself.

Are you travelling her to ride at the other end, or are you moving her? Also how many hours are you intending to travel?
I have similar issues with my mare, and tend to sedate her when possible, sadly is I use the lorry to hack out with, this isn't always possible.
Personally I wouldn't rug her, but would keep an eye on her, and pop afleece or similar on if she gets chilly. I also wouln't recomend travelling for more than about 4 hours in one hit

I would make sure she is topped up with electrolytes, because if she sweats she will loss the essential minerals she needs.

It is good to give her an instant calmer as these contain the magnesium that is good for muscle function.
