Bad traveller

I found a covered crate was the best thing for my lurcher who didn’t like the car. As she went to the yard with me every day she had to get used to it from day 1. My previous lurcher used to drool and try and be sick and I got a sedative for a 5 hour long journey we had to make, it didn’t knock her out and we stopped for regular toilet breaks. After that she was fine in the car, I think in her case she was scared and the sedative allowed her to relax and realise nothing bad was going to happen ..

I always recommend this but not a lot of people can be bothered.
Yet those with horse travel/loading issues do regular repeated trips (I have done).

Interesting watching mine, now 14 months old.
She's always been travelled in a wire crate in the boot from the day we picked her up at just over 10 weeks. Her breeder had taken the pups a few times out in her car, to vets and family visit. She can just see out of the boot at the back if she pops her paws up the crate.
D is v happy over short and long distances, usually settles down to sleep v quickly.

However, when I 1st travelled her in the horsebox, I had her in her harness and safely secured to the passenger seat. Despite repeated trips earlier this year like this, she was very anxious. When I popped the crate in and strapped it using seat belt, she settled straight away.

That’s interesting. Thank you.

And a loose dog in the car at the time of an accident could invalidate car insurance and I wouldn't think pet insurance would be keen to pay up either.
I’m not sure that would be the case, unless it was the dog who caused the accident.
Not saying I’d risk it, but..

Why do we wear seatbelts? I would have thought it was commonsense to restrain a dog in a vehicle, aside from the dog being injured in an accident, who wants a dog sized projectile hurtling through the car?

Highway Code Rule 57
"When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."

I think harnesses to tie dogs down look awful and I wouldn’t use one. Mine are in a box or behind a guard.

I dunno, if there was an unrestrained 20kg mass flying around the car bouncing off heads and windows, I'm not sure the insurers would look on it too kindly.

You can invalidate your insurance by as little as modding the vehicle with fixed cages and not informing the insurer!!

I agree it doesn’t take much for them to turn it down, but I suspect ‘it wil invalidate your insurance’ sounds a bit urban myth ish. Half the time how would they even know? Assuming you just quietly crashed into a wall or something.
I am being overly pedantic, aren’t I!?

I think ‘it may invalidate your insurance’ would be better 😁

Somebody drove into ArklePig.

Definitely! It scares me so much. One of the first questions the police asked when they arrived was if she was secured because apparently it can invalidate your insurance if not. I'm pretty obsessive about road safety in general but will me more so especially re dogs going forward.
