Just been a news release on the website. Due to waterlogged ground. Such a shame I wasn't going this year but still looked forward to watching on tv.

Very disappointing for the competitors but what can you do... we live in a country where the weather dominates our lives :(

Does that mean no shopping? The website is down also btw...

:( absolutley gutted. I've wanted to go for years.so finally booked tickets n I still can't go :(
Will it be on another day? So I could swap a holiday day at work

Yep gutted too...what am I going to spend all the money on that I have been hard saving for months now to go this weekend..... :(

I always look forward to watching on telly, but how gutting for the competitors. And will that affect the olympic selection process?

Won't impact the selection. In fact a lot of olympic contenders were given dispensation to miss badminton. Final Olympic selection is Bicton July 1st

What a shame, can't imagine how gutted some of the competitors and traders must be. Still I suppose it had to be done, poxy weather!! :(

Is this the first time it's ever been cancelled??

What a shame, I love watching it & the people who entered must be gutted - probably a wise decision though, weird kind of "drought" we're having.

This is the first time I have ever booked tickets for Badminton. Huh.

For all that we must think about the safety of horses and riders and the fact that the riders and connections of the horses will be even more gutted, still DISAPPOINTED.

Bl00dy drought.

From Wikki (not sure how accurate though! :p

Badminton has been forced to cancel on several occasions for various reasons. In 1966, 1975 and 1987 the event was cancelled completely and in 1963 was downgraded to a one-day event due to bad weather. In 2001 it was cancelled due to foot and mouth disease

Oh no, what a shame! Though I understand if it is for the horses safety, we don't want any deaths or accidents!
Though couldn't they move it to a different weekend? Or is it strictly for this particular weekend?

Such a shame for all the riders, owners, stand operators, spectators... everyone! I do think it is the right decision though. I live in Dorset and the ground here is horrible, the top few inches are like a sticky but slippery quagmire but only a few inches down and it's still rock solid. I reckon if Badders had gone ahead there would have been lots of lost shoes, exhaustion and sprains and an awful lot of slides and falls.

I remember watching Badminton in 1992 I think it was, when Mary won on William and cross country day was horrendous weather. There were a lot of falls including William Fox Pitt (I think) had his incredibly fatigued horse climb over the last fence and he just lay on the ground for quite a while as the poor chap was so exhausted. I also seem to remember Mark Todd had a fall at the footbridge which was fatal for his horse, I think the horse slipped on take off. The following year was also very very wet as I remember Ginny Leng riding round on Welton Houdini in a shell suit jacket! Don't forget that famous video clip of Lucinda Green sliding down that muddy embankment and diving over the log and into the ditch. Not sure what year that was but the going was just terrible. Back then Badminton made for scary viewing as falls were frequent and the weather and subsequently the ground was usually terrible!

It would be nice if it is re-scheduled but I don't think there is enough space before the Olympics so I guess it will not re-appear until next year now. It could be good for WFP though if they have Badminton next year as the completion of the Grand Slam, it gives him time to pick the best horse for the job and get lots of training in!

I think I'll still have my horse trials sofa festival this weekend but with the help of the video's on Horse & Country TV's website :)

totally understand their decision but still feel very deflated and am dreading telling my daughter when i pick her up from school:( we had booked to stay for the whole event and were taking her friend with us too, going to be 2 very disappointed pony mad 11 year olds later:(
