For anyone who doesn't know; Badger is my mum's pony. Mum has alzheimer's and struggles a lot with her memory. This is Badger:

With the combination of the bad weather and mum going downhill a bit Badger is seriously craving attention (in a nice way!). Mum used to walk down to the stabels at least twice a day and cuddle him and talk to him plus ride when we got him ready for her. At the moment she hasn't seen him at all for a good week as she can't ride (snow) and she can't do anything around the yard anymore as she forgets what she's doing.

Jo and I would love to do more with him but if we are completly honest we like spending all our time with our own horses. We do all the normal jobs for him but we never seem to find the time just to spend daily time giving him attention which he's come to love. Jo rides him when she can to keep him ticking over but we've kept him as a plod for mum so she finds him a bit boring really!

We were thinking of maybe trying to find someone that would like to come up a few times a week and ride him or just make a fuss of him. We don't want a proper sharer as we don't need money or help with the stable/yard duties/turning out (unless they really want to!) so don't know if it would be a viable thing. We'd want to keep it quite relaxed - not set down specific days or anything as he's pretty much always avaiable and can be ridden twice if mum wants to ride as he only plods round on lead rein with her at the moment. She has a lesson once a week as well. She also spends at least 4 months of the year out of the country.

Do you think this would work or any other ideas?

If we had a sharer as such there's a school plus ok hacking. he's a bit wussy hacking on his own but is excellent on lead rein and good in company if he can follow another sensible horse (which mine and Jo's are!).

He's a wuss at shows on his own too - a bit nappy but again is fab on lead rein as thats what he's used to. Jo competes or hunts at least once a week so there's usually a spare space in the horsebox if the person wanted to compete, i only go out about once a month with her.

he jumps small jumps (up to 2'3 ish so far) and he's schooled to prelim level. He finds canter hard because of his build but has mastered 20m circles and can just about balance across the diagonal. He's only 7 so still has plenty to give.

He knows pull to stop and kick to go - and also doesn't mind if mum does both at the same time!! He stops if she leans forwards and generally puts up with most things. he loevs kids and being groomed and is pretty easy in all ways.

He's done sponsored rides, prelim dressage, inhand showing and has been xc schooling. He's also been to dressage camp.

He's plody with novices and sparky with experienced riders!

Oh and he wears pink a lot!!

More pics just cos i can!

I love Badger, I'm sure there are heaps of people who would love to come and ride him. Why not put an advert up at local horsey venues and tack/feed shops.

If he is good with kids, why not see if there is a pony mad child whose parents can't afford a livery who would love to make a fuss of him? He looks amazing and you would be making some little girl's childhood a very happy one! My little girl is deeply passionate about her 30 year old grumpy, laminitic, broken winded, sweet itch prone pony who was leant to us so I speak from experience. I think you offer an ideal set up - if you do get a child I would just stipulate that they can only hack on a leading rein. Most parents wouldn't mind, it's something to do together.

Oooh if only you were in Leicestershire.......my daughter would move heaven and earth to be able to care for a pony like him:)

I think alot of people would jump at the chance!! He could teach a youngster alot about horse management and sounds great for lead-rein.

He sounds like a star!

He looks a lovely sort. I agree with the idea of seeing if a young lass wants to give him some TLC, one who has had lessons but can't afford their own maybe.
Lovely pictures aswell.

Yeah he loves kids and i think he'd be ideal for a mum and daughter/son even. My neice rides him but she's 2.5 hours away so it's only a few times a year:

aww! my mum lets the local rda come over once or twice a week and they use her horse to take a couple of the kids out on or give tacking up/grooming lessons. they have there own ponies but my mum offered and the jumped at the chance so why dont you try something like that??

i'm pretty sure that badger is one of the top 5 fave HHO ponies... he's certainly one of mine.

there will defo be someone out there that would chop off their arm to spend some time with him.

good luck! ask all your horsey friends if they know of anyone. is there anyone on your yard that has a child/younger sibling that would like to?

Awww... he is just SO cute! I'm sure you'll be having to turn into Simon Cowell to whittle down folk jumping at the opportunity!

Sorry to hear your Mum is not so well and Badger is feeling a bit lonely. Hope you find someone soon, can't possibly think of a reason you wouldn't!

Ah that's nice!

We're on a private yard so it's just the three horses so no kids. Will ask horsey friends though. Will facebook it too as that seems to be a good way of getting info around!!

I ADORE Badger, and if I lived near you I would be BEGGING you to let me come and make a fuss of him and have some fun hacks - he is quite simply THE BEST, and whoever you find to help keep him busy will be a very lucky person.

I am so sorry your Mum is struggling more now, it must be so hard for all of you - I hope Badger can continue to make her smile.

best wishes for your mum.badger is adorable.when my daughter was younger he would have been perfect.a pony mad child with a knowledgable parent to supervise so they can build confidence and also want to spend hours messing about grooming, plaiting, bathing etc a pony.he would be inundated with attention and fuss.i think its a good idea and am sure youd have no problem finding someone suitable.

I do know of someone who might be interested - she is at uni so two /three days a week would be perfect for her. I have sent her the link to this post so you might get a pm from her - he is fab btw

Oooooooh what a gorgeous fella

.
I'm sure that if you are as honest to potential cuddle givers as you have been on here then you'll have no problem finding peeps to give him some attention. He really is the most beautiful boy and you obviously know him well.
Your Mum obviously adores him too, lovely photos. Hope you can sort something out that suits you all.

I so wish you were closer, I would love to come and give the little guy cuddles and attention!

I'm sure you'll find a sharer with no problems, he seems like such a lovely boy.

Sorry to hear that your mum is going downhill

Badger is gorgeous, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding someone to give him lots of love.

Thank you - i have had a pm from someone so i think that may be her.

Thanks for your wishes for mum everyone. She's physically healthy and still bubbly so that's the main thing.

This post has seriously prickled my soft side. Badger deserves some sort of award for all he is doing for your mum, he is an amazing horse and I truly hope you find someone who will help you guy out. I do hope your mum rallies too, she is an idol of mine as, let's face it, she lives with the one thing that we all dread, and she does it so well, she needs an award too. Add to that the two wonderful daughters she has raised and it leaves me rather teary!

Ah that's lovely thank you. I'm just trying to download a picture of her knitting which fascinates me as it's beautiful and yet sometimes she can't dress herself. Our roles have reversed and i get so proud of her!
