Badminton entries are up!

Also, does the rule about only riding 2 horses still apply? If that's the case, then the top 7 on the waitlist are guaranteed an entry after all those riders with more than 2 horses accepted decide which to run and w/d the others.

Yes agreed I follow him on FB and what a fab recovery he had from the colic never mind the ownership saga which seems to have resolved itself?!

Judge found in favour of Peter from what I remember. I follow on FB too, just such a sweet story.

I do find the new entry criteria a bit disappointing though from the perspective of the amateur rider/'housewives favourite' type of combination - I love seeing Coolgrange Merger and Tony Warr, they are brilliant but will always struggle to get the FEI points to get in easily, and so languish at the bottom of the waitlist. Likewise it is now extraordinarily difficult for the average amateur-with-a-good-horse to get enough points, which sort of takes the gloss off the Badminton dream/experience for me. When I was younger, there were always a handful of people entered who had one good horse and were not 'names' but who went round with a smile on their faces and proved that ordinary people with a special horse could make it. Now, unless you are a pro, you have to wish misfortune on others to get in (well not directly, but you know what I mean!), and TBH it's so much less of an aspirational competition for me because it's virtually impossible to get in unless you are a v good pro.

Not sure I have a solution, but it's just a bit of a shame I think - those 'against the odds' tales were always what helped make Badminton special for me.

Unfortunately that's not the case as there are more than 85 entries on the 'accepted' list to take into consideration the fact that numerous riders have more than 2 horses already accepted.

It looks like that has already been taken into account as the front page says: "Because of double entries and riders who have entered 3 or 4 horses, there are more than 85 horses on the list but it will produce a maximum of 85 runners."

Will keep everything crossed for T_E (although not wishing misfortune on others!) and also a HHO-er's horse who is sitting pretty high on the wait list so should have a good chance of getting in. :D

Agree re points system I think it is unfair and weighted to multi horse and sponsored pros who can afford to tour round events.

All those with more than two horses are double entries so that will already have been considered so no top 7 won't automatically get slot once those pros decide which two horses they are taking unfortunately.

Ok - the Badminton site looks a bit rubbish on my Mac as the search function sort of sits over the text, so I haven't been reading stuff on the site - and I couldn't see that text on the page I was reading.

At least now they do take into account the multiple riders it used to be the top 85 with waitlist however a lot on the waitlist never got the chance because you do not have to decide who to run until the first trot up.

I've always thought that since we have the short format now that they could fit in another dozen or so horses, maybe make it a round 100.

It wouldn't add too much time to the dressage days and there is always plenty of room in the show jumping.

Perhaps the stables only hold 85!

I've thought that too. XC day seems to finish so early.

It would seem the obvious thing to allow more horses, but I could see it quickly turning into a nightmare if there were a couple of long holds on the course XC day. Can you imagine the outcry if people didn't get to go XC because the light had faded too much because it was too late :(

Yes that's true Shazzababs....I hadn't thought about how late they started.
Amazing how the gate prices have gone up but the day has got shorter ;)

FlipFlop5 - four-star first-timers, at a quick glance, Willa Newton is the obvious one, but I'll have to scour for more... there are also some who've been four-star but not to Badminton - Tom McEwen, Gaby Cooke (sure to get in from waiting list) and probably more...

Also, what happens when someone like Caroline Powell is high up the waitlist, but already has 2 accepted? So lets say they get to accepting her (she's 9th) - do they also accept 10th on the waitlist since she can only run 2 of the 4 she's got entered?

Yes, that's right, so once they get down to Caroline they will actually accept her and the 10th and she can only run two horses.
