I've just booked flights to go to my first badminton and was hoping someone could give me some reccommendations as to where is best to stay. I've been trawling the internet and there are plenty of lovely (very expensive) hotels. There are 4 of us going over and would like a bit of 'atmosphere' in the evening. We're quite flexible on the kind of accommodation - happy with self catering and would like it to be as cheap as possible (more to spend when we get in there!!).

Any pointers would be very much appreciated!

Nicola

OP - as dianchi says you could stay on site, not that it's a cheap option at Badminton! There are companies which offer caravan rental and set up for you, so you can just turn up on the day. This is the first one I found http://www.tilshead-caravans.com/index.php?id=108 Camping gives you great flexibility, you can also be at the event early and late with no traffic queues, and it's rather lovely to be mooching around as the grounds are quiet, you'll also definitely make it in time for the trot up on the final day, this is a nail biting time, get there early for a front row position! I've been going to Badminton since the mid 80's, have done it as a day trip, hotel and camped in tents and caravans and a camper van - I would recommend camping.

The ones that are going wouldn't camp - thank you though! ;-)

Pretty sure there are glamping sites there. Or rent a motorhome/caravan. It really is worth staying on site, so I';d speak to your friends again. Staying in the hotels round there can be very expensive, especially as you've less than 6 months to go - I know people who book a year in advance!

I'd like to jump on this thread with Nicola too!!!,..as i too (and a friend who is wheel chair bound unfortunately due to a riding accident) would like to go to Badminton next year as well!! My pal knows she won't be able to 'walk the course' so to speak in her chair, but i'd love us to have the opportunity to attend.

I'm looking for suitable accommodation that is 'wheelchair friendly' for the two of us for next May if anyone can offer any suggestions on where to stay.

Like Nicola, we don't want to be spending extortionate amounts of money on the accomm if at al possible

I've done some initial hunting and such an awful lot of hotels/b& b's are already fully booked for the Badminton dates.

I'd love to find a good old fashioned farmhouse type B & B if i could if anyone has any recommendations that would be so great.

A friend of mine has a holiday cottage that she lets out - no idea if it is free or indeed if it is suitable for wheelchairs but I'll find out - PM me if interested. It is less than half an hours drive.

Just a thought...Its not an idyllic country b and b but i am pretty sure their are a couple of premier inns locally. May not get the atmosphere and will have a drive in every day but its clean, warm and very reasonable. Think the ones in wilts are normally around £70/80 a night. I use them alot for business and although not terribly exciting you know what you are going to get and they always have disabled access room.xxx

Now I may be wrong and forgive me if I am, but, I think that badminton have mobility scooters for hire. If I am right, would that make it possible for your friend to "walk" the course. I have a friend who was able to hire one at Burghley and it made such a difference.

They definitely do mobility scooter hire :)

One of the nearby Premier Inns or the like would be fine...you could just stay on the ground/at the bar until later if you wanted the atmosphere.

A friend & I stayed at a hotel (best western) nearby. We arrived on the Friday night & in the bar got chatting to a wedding party that were getting married locally the next day & having their reception at the hotel. After XC when we went back to the hotel the bride & groom insisted we join them for the evening reception....we were a little underdressed in our joules t-shirts & dubarry's :D we had a great time drinking & dancing....mind you the resulting hangover meant we missed the trot up :(

Cross Hands at Old Sodbury would be one of the closest and not expensive. Not sure how many accessible rooms it would have though. If not plenty of choice in Bristol and if you're hiring a car it's only two junctions on the motorway - but leave early!!!

Premier inn would be wheelchair accessible but not right on Badmintons doorstep. Some friends of mine stay there as its reasonably priced.
There's also the Hare and Hounds in Westonbirt. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible coz my dads in a wheelchair and we've been there a few times and I really like it, you'd have to phone and check the accommodation, but its worth a look as its really near Badminton.
The Holford arms has camping and is also quite near.
Worth calling the organisers regarding mobility scooter availability and bookings.
:-)
