Well that was obvious!

1. Because Badminton is one of the most attended sporting events in the world most went to watch LIVE rather than stay at home to watch.

2. Because of the withdrawals

3. Warm weekend

Such a shame, how on earth is our sport EVER going to get the recognition it deserves?

Perhaps they would get more viewers at the likes of Blenheim, Bramham, Chatsworth?

Any excuse

Crikey I can only watch bloomin Badminton and Burghley on TV if those go what am I paying the licence fee for?! I dont want to have to pay for fancy tv ...

I would have thought that those were the viewing figures they would expect to be honest.

I thought that the coverage was absolutely first class - and loved the commentary by the 'experts'.

However, I too switched off after the beautiful Icare was hurt. Badminton was a shambles this year - and that was just another nail in the coffin for me.......

I think the report should have been weighed up against the actual spectator attendance. That would have perhaps made for a more balanced write-up.

I think also to be considered is the late start tmie on interactive. it started over an hour late and I know my housemate very enarly gave up trying to watch it because she couldn't find it! There was no mention it was late (due to withdrawals)

also I wonder if it takes in to account multiple viewers. For example we had a friend round to watch at ours because she doesn't have access to interactive so thats 3 people watching one TV!

They are not bad viewing figures, i was expecting those figures to be lower, they did well to get over 1 million on sunday, actually was quite shocked. I am not sure how many they expected.

I didn't watch as I have been hiding away revising for exams and you also have to take into account everyone who competes at weekends. If nobody competed that weekend am sure the figures would be much higher.

Think the majority of horse owners (like me) recorded it to watch later, as funnily enough I was doing my own horse, when it was show, plus it ment I could fast forward through all the drivel and just enjoy watching the horses in action.

I think there are another couple of problems.

Fistly the demographic grouping. Most people interested in watching this are not slouched on their sofa's all day on a Saturday and Sunday, indeed most, like ourselves were out dealing with our bloody horses, and this will always be the case for daytime boradcasts of this sort..I would have preferred to have had it repeated in the evening, I could have watched it then!

Secondly, the system of measuring TV ratings may be flawed against such an event. Although the boxes which record what is watched, are placed in random households in the UK, the niche interest of this event means that the random sampling may actually not represent accurately the number of people who would have sat down to watch the program. Maybe they can be more concise than this now with the fact it was digital TV for the XC day, but for the Sunday there is no absolute guarantee.

Of course the viewing would be higher on sat because most of us were there sat, then watch it on tv Sunday. I know that was the case for me

Do we know how it compares to the live coverage of other specialist sports, say Snooker?

I bet the Olympics gets some ropey old viewing figures from time to time but theres nomention of that being scrapped....

**mumble mumble**

TBH I dont see why the withdrawals would have had an impact on viewing figures. People aren't going to stop watching just because some people have pulled out?!

Problem is that a lot of riders compete at the weekends so they're simply not around to watch it! I was away competing on the Sat (but did get it recorded).

I hope they don't pull it. I recon they should provide footage from other events too.... every single football match is on tv... so why not have a far more exciting sport like eventing on on instead, even if it was just a round-up! or golf, who watches or enjoys golf??

might go and hide now!

I really hope that the BBC don't punish us horsey viewers - by reducing future coverage - just because the figures weren't what they'd hoped for.

I know a lot of people who simply didn't bother to watch because it seemed an anti-climax after so many big name withdrawals. With any luck the BBC will put pressure on the event organisers to make sure this kind of debacle will never be repeated.

If there's a good field and the prospect of a great competition, then more people will watch.

Not to take anything away from the winner. Lucinda did a fantastic job, but it was a Badminton that lacked a lot of its usual magic.
