So my new horse is arriving tomorrow.. and I am actually really nervous! He isn't my first as I have had a full loan previously, but I suppose I am a bit worried that I am going to suddenly be totally incapable of looking after a horse. Or I won't have something I need. Or.. I don't know.. he's going to be plucked out of the sky by a vulture or something.

Although the yard we will be at seems lovely, as does he, so fingers crossed it will all go fine. He is an 8yo Warmblood called Jake (although I keep referring to him as something different in my head, but trying to avoid the nickname route!) Needs fittening up as is coming from the field and I am really really excited.

BONUS ROUND: I know this is silly as you can't really know, but guess how big he is now going from this photo of him as a foal. Please Note: Both his sire and dam were 16hh, I think his full sister is 15.3hh if I remember correctly. (oh and the size of those knees!)

Firstly congratulations on your new horse, secondly - you will be fine. And don't buy lots of stuff at once - I've refrained and now I'm glad as I would have bought a load of stuff I didn't need.
Get your basics, you'll work out what you're missing as you go along.

In terms of height, I'm going to say 16.1hh.

Good luck and come back to post a photo of him settled in and to reveal the height answer! X

Omg, I am going to immediately steal him if he's over 16hh! My absolute dream horse, coloured warmblood! He is gorgeous, I bet! I'm going to say 15.3hh but oddly, I'm thinking he's huge and around 17hh (cos that's my dream horse!)

What do you have for him so far? Rugs are my secret obsession-see the fleece I just posted, I think I might go mad and get it even tho I just bought a plain one.

I'm not going to let on just yet, but one of your guesses is not so far off the mark cinnamontoast! I will post an up to date photo of him when he arrives tomorrow.

Right.. He comes with bridle and all rugs under the sun, I have a saddle, numnahs, headcollar, leadrope, JW Training Aid, lunge cavesson/line/whip, stirrups, stirup leathers, girth, haynets, water/feed/hay buckets, wheelbarrow, fork, shovel, First Aidy bits, and extensive grooming kit travel boots. (Don't need feed/straw/hay etc as he will be on part and this is incuded) and I have a few more non-essential things that I have persuaded myself I need. I can't be missing anything can I?!

A broom?... Insurance? Erm and you can't just have one saddle - what happens when one is dirty?? ;)

No, you won't need anything else tomorrow! You will be fine and so will he. I bet he is gorgeous, he certainly was as a foal - and so was his mum. My guess is 16hh.

Even those of us who have had loads of horses can be a bit apprehensive when a new horse is on the way - is he going to be the same as when I tried him? Did I try him in all the situations that I needed to? Will he settle?

And in the vast majority of cases it all works out fine. Enjoy!

I have a 16.3 tobiano warmblood, I am interested to know your boys breeding? He looks lovely :) mine had those knees as a foal. I'm gong to guess same height as my mare 16.3

Oh Dang and Blast, I actually haven't got a broom! I'll have to go and have a dig in the shed. But I am a BHS Gold member, I am not going to fully insure him due to particular exclusions. I am not sure of the breeding off of the top of my head but I will have a look at his paperwork tomorrow.

Thank you for your compliments everyone. A couple of you were actually quite close, he in in fact 17.3hh!

I NEED him! I knew he was going to be huge! Good job he's got his rugs, I had major issues getting 7ft rugs for my 17.2hh Hanoverian X some years ago!

Can we have pics of him now, please, I will be drooling!

You'll be fine with that lot, you'll find things you need as you go along. I have a slight rug/matchy matchy obsession so went slightly overboard on rugs...for a cob. Some have never even been out of the bag and chances are he will have outgrown them as he's no longer a 5'3, which is what they are yet I can't seem to part with them.
He's gorgeous but I wish you luck keeping him clean. As a fellow coloured owner, I feel your pain.

I'm hoping the larger rugs mean there will be more of them left in the sales, does that happen?
I feel you on the keeping him clean, I will admit I was secretly pleased when I realised he has a black tail.
Oh if you insist! haha..

He is gorgeous :)

Worth having a word with Shearwater re insurance. Might be worth considering as everything about him will cost more.

The exception to the 'cost more' is rugs - seen quite a few at the larger end of the scale in the sale racks :)

Thank you!! I will make sure I take a few and upload them tomorrow.

On a side note, I have just finished putting together a flat pack wheelbarrow, what a bloody palava that was!!

Gosh, what a beautiful horse. You must be SO excited, OP! Sounds like everything is sorted and all you need now is more photos to post of when he arrives :)

Have a wonderful day with him tomorrow.

He is a beauty! Warmblood coloureds are so smart :) he has a lovely eye to him. Premier equine always have their large rugs in the sale. I tell my mate she WILL fit a 7ft as they are always going cheap!

Aw he is beautiful congrats. :)

Agree with others try not to go overboard on equipment. It just costs so much and it's not necessary straight away. But you sound prepared and have everything you will be fine. Just enjoy him now :)
