Baggy Jackets and Show Pelhams.....

I'm wondering if you lovely lot could give me some advice :).
I've recently lost some weight (1.5 stone go me :D), and as a result I think my Show Jacket looks a bit ridiculous :mad:! Seriously I look like a bag lady....

^ this was at Mottram show this year, I just think we look a bit untidy now :(, I'm not really in a position to buy another jacket due to lack of funds and so I lead onto my problem.
I've entered into Cheshire show next week and not sure what best to do about it? The sewing lady I normally use (friend of my Grandma's :D) is away for a couple of weeks so no chance of getting it adjusted in time...
Is there anything I can do to improve the appearance?

For my next question :o, what is the consensus for show pelhams, extra slip-head or not? I bought one to replace my rugby pelham (worn as a double bridle) as the rugby pelham I thought looked too big on her head. I thought it could be worn without, but after a recent conversation with a showing judge she said I should definitely use the extra slip-head......:confused:

Also any tips for my first Cheshire show, Doodle is very experienced and we've done a fair bit of Agricultural shows and even went down to the Cherif last year so we're not totally novice :o, but I am feeling slightly out of my depth at our first proper county show....

Looking at the photo of her head the loose ring looks wrong without a slip head, it also has some effect on how you keep a contact with one the contact is more stable, so I would definitely use one on her.

Well done on the weight loss but I have no idea how to make you feel more comfortable in the jacket, it looks fine in the photos but you are probably a bit self conscious, tie the number tightly, maybe get a wider piece of ribbon or elastic, sit up and don't think about the jacket, your horse is lovely show her off that is what the judge should be looking at.
 
Thanks be positive, I will put the slip-head back on. She's a lively horse but will go well in just a simple snaffle, but I've decided to go back to the Pelham as she can get a bit hot and giraffe like.

Hmm possibly more a feeling of being self conscious than it actually looking terrible then? Will have a go with a tighter number thanks.

Veterans and PBA's here we come.

Definitely use the slip head on the show Pelham - nothing worse than a show or rugby without this! Can't really see on your photo, but make sure you've got a lip strap on as well.

Jacket wise - worth trying your local dry cleaners, I know one local to me, Johnsons, I think, do adjustments and don't take very long at all. Or see if you can borrow one for Cheshire whilst you await your grandma's friend to return! I think a tighter number string would add to the pinched in my jacket doesnt fit look! Well done on the weight loss though :)

See I learn something new everyday, as when I did a search before I bought the show pelham it said you didn't need the slip head :rolleyes:, but will definitely be putting it on now! Very glad I decided to check :D.
Lip strap, check ;), had to search for a pony size one for her dainty head, but we have one :D.

Will have a look at the dry cleaners, but would prefer to go on a recommendation really, would hate for them to make a mess and then have no jacket :eek:. Don't think I know anyone with one my size, actually don't even know what size I would be now?? Most of the people I know show in tweed....

Wonder if I could deliberately shrink it on a hot wash :D, only joking, I suggested that to my grandma and she wasn't impressed with my 'outside the box' thinking :D.

Any other pearls of wisdom or things to make sure I have for the day will be gratefully received!

Think you look fine, but heels down!!! That would improve your leg length and the overall picture though of course it is only a snapshot in time. I am fully able to make that comment as it is one of my major problems.

I had a jacket adjusted by a mens tailor as thought it was so say made to measure it was horribly baggy around the arms.

If you have done the Cherif, that is pretty serious so have no fears about county level.

Are you hack or show intermediate or PBA or all?

:D They seem to have a mind of their own, pesky heels :D, if I have someone shouting at me I can get them to behave but the moment I have something else to think about it all goes to pot! Good job I don't do equitation, but I'm thinking of doing some of my warm-up without stirrups and see if this will lengthen my leg out and drop my heels?

I love my Grandma's sewing friend, she totally re-made my tweed jacket when I first got it, and took pretty much every seam in, sadly it is rather baggy on me as well now! She did an amazing job and would only take a token amount as payment :o, she did draw the line at making me a concours outfit though :D. Will try and get round to my Grandma's and see what her suggestions are.

The Cherif was lovely, and my main reason for going (was shocked we qualified really, and we've qualified again this year :eek::D:D) was to meet Doodle's breeder's so I think I could chill out knowing we were just going really to see them and also have a bit of a party at the same time ;). I would love her to do well at Cheshire so think I'm putting myself under pressure!

I do all three, but really only hack and PBA as the smaller shows don't always have ISRT. Which is a shame as she is most suited to the intermediate as she's only 14.3hh so we get a bit dwarfed in the hack classes and PBA's.
We're only doing the PBA and Veteran's though at Cheshire as I didn't need to join any other societies to enter those particular classes (see the cheap-skate surfacing again, I should never have bought my own house :o!).

Hoping Cheshire will be a good day out, does anyone know what the ground is like there? Being a veteran she does like the ground to be just so with no lumpy bits :D.

Your jacket doesn't look bad but if you really do feel it is too baggy you can always do a temporary job untill your regular sewing lady is available. I would turn it inside out and use a row of small safety pins on each under arm seam (going parallel with the seam) to take up as much of the slack as you like. Don't make it too tight or the pins may pull the fabric and make little holes.

As an addendum to Sprig's idea, rather than use pins, you could just use a big tacking stitch to do the same - should be more comfortable and will just pull out when you take it to be done properly :D

Yes I was thinking tacking it might be better, I can just imagine getting stabbed by the safety pins in the ring :D, it could liven up our individual :eek::D.

I did consider that Pootleperkin but wondered if there was a risk of an over enthusiastic movement popping the thread and then the whole run of stitching would come undone. I suppose OP could tack and then take emergency safety pins in case of an incident.

I'm in Whitefield, Manchester, gosh that's very kind, not sure what size I need... think 10ish? Will check what size the current one is, as would need one smaller than that :cool:.

I hadn't thought of that, she is normally a smooth ride but could certainly have an enthusiastic moment :D. Will experiment this weekend and see.

Hi Lilyhead, my current jacket is a Mear's 36, so about a 12 I think.
Think a 34 should fit me better?
