Hello, my horse has been hot headed jumping and always been bouncing about at jumps- as a result he rushed and often knocked them down which was annoying because I know he can really jump when it suits him!
He used to have two mugs of bailey's low cal no.14 in his food, but I ran out and with all easter and bank hols etc I couldn't get to the feed shop. I have been jumping him recently and the change is really noticeable, he is much more settled - taking off on a decent stride as he isn't rushing as much and leaving the jumps up !

Is it coincidence and he's just got the hang of it now? or could the food have been making him difficult?

He's still fed quite a large scoop of dengie healthy hoof and a handful of alfa A molasses free. He is neither a fatty or a skinny, maintains a spot on weight but I worry that if I keep him off his balancer he will not get all his nutrients to help his muscles and tissues build and repair, he's out 24/7 on a lot of grazing but its not rich /good quality. So is there something else I could give him if this is the case?

thanks for reading :)

While all horses and environments are different, so couldn't say whether it was the feed or not but I've been using low cal for several years on WB's, TB X , ISH and cobs without any fizziness.

It might be coincidence and time of year etc.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was the balancer. We used to use NAF Pink Powder as a balancer and 'accidentally' found out when we ran out, that it was responsible for some very silly behaviour, as well as very tender feet in my usually ultra-sensible mare.

TBH, I think that balancers are another marketting ploy by the feed companies who have realised that many of us are moving away from feeding their high starch/high sugar mixes and are determined to get our money somehow. Horse have evolved to eat poor quality grass and get all that they need from it, so unless your vet has diagnosed a specific problem, I would just stop the balancer.

Same here with my heavy cob, been on Lo-Cal for years with no problems. Although farriers forumula used to send him a bit heady !!!

I wouldn't have thought it would have made him fizzy, maybe he is just sensitive to something in there! he is coping fine without it so I suppose I will just keep him off it unless he starts to show any signs that he needs something more.

There is also Baileys No 19 performance balancer which is near enough the same as lo cal but with more vits and also spoilers performance balancer x
