Quick query, my lovely boy is very sensitive to food in that I have to be very careful to give non-heating foods. He cannot have Alpha A for example as it blows his brain and he becomes very sharp, I usually have him on Calm & Condition with Hi-Fi which works for him, however over the winter I have added some Baileys No 1 cereal to help him keep some weight on as he usually drops horribly, this is meant to be non-heating, however he has been rather sharp lately - anyone found Bailey's No 1 to make their horses a bit sharp?

I have taken him off the Baileys and he does seem calmer but its too early to know if the baileys was to blame. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced similar??

Baileys No 1 is pure micronised wheat - therefore a cereal and pretty high in starch so quite likely to heat sensitive horses up!

When I was putting weight on my last project horse I had him on Baileys No1. It's fantastic for condition but he was definitely sharp on it. I stuck with it as it was doing such a good job putting weight on him.

What u could do is leave him off it for 2wks then start introducing it really gradually again. Think 1/2 cup for 3 days, 1 cup for another 3 days and so on. U might find he can only tolerate a certain amount before it goes to his head.

Thank you for your advice, at the moment I've taken him off the Baileys No1 and he is back to his old self. His weight is fine right now and as we have plenty of grass at our yard I've decided to just up the calm and condition and give him an extra feed a day until spring when the grass will be plenty on its own as it is every year.

Next winter I may attempt Baileys again but in small doses!!

TGM is completely correct. If your horse is sensitive to Alfa I would avoid no.1 at all costs.
Actually I would avoid no.1 full stop its way to high starch than I like to feed anything. Many good products on the market to help weight gain without filling them full of starch.
Stick to the c&c it's fab!

Thanks Cosmicblue, good to confirm I was right, he is definitely back to his old self since taking him off the no 1 - sticking with C & C and just increasing the quantity if I need to!

Its funny because many people do not believe me that Alpha A sends him loopy, they all tell me it is non-heating, and everyone on the yard told me I was wrong that it can't be the no 1 heating him up this time as that too in non-heating!

Hi there,

I've got a highly strung, feed sensitive 17.2 tb. I put him on the "non-heating" Allen and pad weight gain which les his mind so much he was burning off everything I put in him by fretting! He's now on baileys no.4 top line and condition and he's fine on it.....in fact he's now on no.11 race horse cubes which are the exact same product as the no.4 but 3quid cheaper a bag ( sneaky monkey baileys)! Might be worth a try x

I have never had a problem with the Baileys No1 and have sensitive Arabs.

The Alfa A has a lot of Molasses in it so can send horses a bit loopy. I would change to the Alfa oil which will help the weight gain.

Some horses react to Alfa it's actually quite common. Hence why a&p do a Alfa/molasses/barley etc free range.
Different horses react to different things, as they say horses for courses :)
