... is it worth feeding both? Or do you think that No 4 with with maybe outshine or similar should keep weight up. He's not under weight now just looking forward to keeping it consistent over winter.

Unless your horse is a very poor doer, I would have thought No 4 fed at recommended amount would be enough to keep weight on without any extras (assuming you are giving ad lib hay/haylage). No 4 is a 'complete feed' in that it is supplemented with vit/mins, whereas No 1 is just pure cooked wheat with nothing else added.

What is your horse being fed at the moment? Have you any reason to presume he will drop weight badly during the winter? Is he going to have ad lib hay/haylage.

He's probably about right now but he has a history of finding it hard to keep weight on. He's fed ad-lib haylege at the moment. I've just taken him on he's on no 1 and no 4 now but I always thought that there wasn't much point of both, unless like you said they are very poor condition. I'm just looking to perhaps simplfy what he has as well, he's on no 4 no 1, beet and hi-fi at the mo.

If you have only just got him, do you know if he was getting ad lib haylage in his old home? If he wasn't, then that might explain why he was hard to keep weight on, and you might find it easier to maintain his condition now he is getting more forage.

If you want to simplify his feed, then you could drop the No. 1 and increase the No. 4 to compensate.

Yeah, he's only on loan from a friend so I know he's alway had ad lin haylege. I might try that and see how he goes. If he drops weight I can always add the no 1 back in. Have you ever used outshine - or heard any feedback about it? They always seem so keen to recommend it at the Baileys trade stands...

Outshine is very good! Very good for keeping condition. I am a real fan of number one though for weight gain as it was the only thing that helped me with one of mine. Gave extras on top of it tho. Outshine very expensive!

I've not used Outshine myself, but the advantage of it is that because it is a high oil feed it is very concentrated in calories - it has 24 MJDE/kg compared to 13.5 MJDE/kg for Baileys No. 4 and 14 MJDE/kg for Baileys No. 1. So a relatively small amount can still have a significant weight gain effect. It is not the cheapest weight gain option though! There are other various high oil feeds available such as Equijewel, Triple Top Up or you could consider micronised linseed which works out much cheaper than Outshine.

The other advantage of the high oil feeds is that they are less likely to hot the horse up than cereal-based feeds and also give a lovely shine to the coat!

Heres what Baileys no 1 and 4 did for my mare
