I have been told by a Baileys rep that no.6 endurance mix could be suitable for my thin, ulcer prone TB. Theres also a testimonial on the website that suggests it would be suitable for him. I really need to find a feed that will improve his weight and condition, he's currently on Pure - Condition and it has imporved his condition slightly, but he is still underweight and abit poor looking. Has anybody fed no 6 sucessfully to an ulcer prone horse?

I would imagine there would be too much starch.
You would be better of feeding list of fibre and oil.

i don't know about the endurance feed but, for the ulcers have you tried happy tummy's charcoal supplement i have a friend with an ulcer prone thoroughbred and shed swears by it and it's not just good for ulcers it help everything. You should give it a try am concidering feeding it to my horse as he has tied-up twice in the last 7 months as it is supposed to also be good for soaking up the lactic acid. :)

Ers pellets by d&h (or their stay power cubes) they r for race horses (so high work load) but r less than 7% starch. They r advertised for horses that tye up or have epsm. Also baileys outshine and dengue alfa a or hi fi senior. Tge senior is same energy as original, but is easier for them to digest so they get more from it.

I used to feed both mine it years ago but took them off it after checking the starch level - it's 22%.

I don't know about feeding a horse with ulcers but I would think if starch is an issue there's other products out there - TopSpec cool condition cubes which are less than 10% combined sugar & starch, Winergy Equilibrium - the Condition is 10% starch, Saracen ReLeve 8% starch...... I'm sure there are many more. These are all calorific products which I'm guessing you need if you're feeding No.6.

Also for ulcers would a horse not be better with a fibre based feed? The Endurance Mix does contain Baileys Alfalfa I think but it doesn't look like a fibre based feed so it must be in very small amounts. Mine loved it so much they hardly chewed it, just inhaled it, so that's probably not great for an ulcer prone horse!

does anyone know, is there a way of working out the % starch in the feed or is it just a case of contacting the companies and asking ?

ive checked on the websites and cannot find starch content.

im also struggling feeding a ulcer prone horse that needs condition and is in medium/hard work.

some companies now put this info on the bag, others u can google or ask at the feed shop. if no then give the feed company a call. Spillers put it in their feed booklet, D&H sometimes have it on interent.
ERS pellets r fab for weight gain (and baileys outshine or copra meal), ERS are less than 7 % starch and are for working race horses. also anything low starch/sugar high fiber like uick beat is fab as helps slow digestion down, ensuring things are digested/absorbed in the right plae in the gut, and maintaining correct ph, so less likey to agrivate ulcers/cause lami etc.

I have been feeding these and alfa a oil (or hifi senior) for weight gain of 2 tbs - one had suspected ulcers. he took a lot longer to gain weight, and he had also lost weight quicker, as the ulcers can affect theri ability to absorbe the nutrients fro the food, depending on where they are.

I have been reading up on ulcers recently and apparently liqurice suppliment can help (but feed short term), as can brewers yeast and meadow sweet, but I have not tried them yet.

Does he have any existing gastric or hind gut ulcers?

Is he in work?

Are his teeth OK? (please don't take offence, I missed this myself once)

How much turnout/forage does he get?

Is he in work?
