I recently changed my lab from tinned food with mixer to the above.

Despite feeding her less than than the recommended amount for her size, I can see that she is putting on weight.

Has anyone else found this with Bakers, or can recommend me a complete feed for dogs prone to weight gain that won't break the bank (have noted that the Bakers Light is a third of the price more than the standard!!).

Thanks

hehe we call this junk food for dogs - they have it when we get a take away. They love it but its full of crap:)
We use Wainwrights (Pets at home sell). I have always used Burns and love it, but at nearly £50 a 15kg bag, it had to go. Wainwrights is about £30 a 15kg bag.

Wouldn't feed bakers ever. Wills arthritis got a bit better when he came off that stuff! Can you afford wainwrights or skinners? Have a look at the ingredients you may scare your self at the 4% meat which isn't really meat and the amount of salt. I am no expert but would never again touch this or pedigree dog food. Mine are raw so ideally never dog food again however if I ever had to I would prob go to wainwrights.

When we got Dex from the rescue Bakers was the only food they said NOT to feed him, despite him being on cheap nasty crud in the kennels.

He is on James Wellbeloved, which suits his slightly sensitive belly

We are another family who wont touch Bakers with a barge pole. We have had good results on wainwrights also, as well as James wellbeloved.
I do admit though that my big lad gets one meal of Pedigree large breed per day as he is a pain to keep weight on for the show ring. Pedigree really bulks him up but i wouldnt feed him on it more than once a day (he has three meals a day!).

Bin it......:D

We have ours on Autarky, he loves it and full of all the right stuff. About £15 for a 20kg bag.....might be 25kg but either way it's cheap and lasts for ever with our Greyhound.

When Betsy was tiny I had to leave her with my OHs parents to do exams at uni, I left a bag of JWB puppy and money to buy another bag if it ran out but when I got home they were feeding her Bakers.

She was loopy and pooping loads, her poop was almost the size of her. I would never feed it.

You can get Burns online including delivery for £35 a bag. Just google it.

My dogs on Bakers, and he's not over weight or hyper ??? I really like it, his coat is super shiny and he's got so much more muscle and looks a picture of health - the agility club instructors always compliment his condition. He's never had ear infections and doesn't get runs or a smelly bottom like he did when he was being fed meat at the rescue kennels we got him from, or when he's given wet food.

Not helpful to the OP, but I'm a massive fan of bakers, my dog has never been more happy & healthy than since being fed it.

Your dog is lovely, and very lucky to not have had the reactions of the other dogs. BUT having read the comments and the articles are you still happy to feed it to him? I know if I'd read half of the negative comments on the feed my dogs were having I'd be thinking twice...no matter how shiney his coat is? Have you read the back of the box? 13 E numbers...

I'm another that thinks Bakers is junk food for dogs, the number of dogs I've seen that are completely hyper on it and calmed down when their food is changed.

Mine are fed raw, but if I were to recommend a dry food it would be Burns, Arden Grange or Skinners.

Wow - thanks for all the replies!

Having only just opened the 15kg sack a couple of weeks ago I am loathe too bin it, but after all your comments I think I may have too.

She has gone from reasonably slim (for a lab!) to a table top in those 2 weeks and can't believe how quickly she has put it on, especially as since the weather has improved her excercise has increased.....

Any recommendations for Chudleys as I know my feed merchants stock it and seems quite economical?

Thanks again for all your advice X

Another vote for Skinners, by far the best of the 'budget' feeds (for want of a better term) and loads cheaper than Bakers anyway.

Bakers contains known carcinogens, less than 4% meat and added sugar and salt. Any debate about feeding dogs a species inappropriate diet that is 96% grains aside, any dog I've ever known that is fed on Bakers has a stinking, rotten mouth, poor coat (greasy/flaky) and produces an astonishing volume of soft orange poo.

I would stay away from that too. Lots of corn and wheat in most formulas. Very little meat.

I really really suggest fish4dogs. You can order online and their delivery is fantastic.

How tragic katielou.

If not all the nasty added extra's, I'd also object to paying so much for a food where clearly the budget mainly goes on its advertising & placement costs than on quality ingredients. I get fish4dogs via vetUK as it works out cheaper and they also do Skinners F&T, delivery is free >£19, you can probably get samples if you contact the manufactures.

Skinners, Skinners, Skinners for cheap dog food!

Sure, what works, works, I am sure individual dogs thrive on Bakers but it is only so popular because it is cheap and they are owned by a huge multinational with a world-conquering advertising budget with doggies in space suits - seriously, why would dog food need to come in those weird colours?!
My dog did fantastically on Jollyes own brand fish and rice mulch for £19 and I have not found another food to rival it *for him* since they discontinued it, but would I recommend it? Hell no!!!

I wouldn't worry about chucking it out, it's nasty, cheap crap, hardly a fortune compared to your dog's health. I don't mean to be nasty, but shops aren't allowed to store it near cattle feed because we don't want it in the food chain due to it's carcinogenic nature.

Dogs can't digest grain, it's purely a cheap filler to bulk out crap food. I'm actually amazed Pets at Home etc sell it.

Just because the company can afford to advertise it prettily doesn't mean it's any good.

Lidl do a food that looks similar to Bakers, is made in the same area as Bakers and is sold for £5.99 for 15kg which is about the correct price for Bakers.

I feed Skinners or fish4dogs or Autaky.

Surprised no one has mentioned CSJ dog foods, had my shelties and border collie on it for 3 years ,never any mister whippies , and they are in fab condition , small stools with little smell , does'nt put weight on them even my little bitch who broke a leg and now has restricted exercise has'nt piled on the pounds, my agility border collie has the higher protein food but is'nt silly on it, and at about £12 for 15kg is excellant value , would definatly recommend .
