Please can I have your thoughts? I've just put my dogs on to the 'meaty meal' boxes and am mixing them with tinned Chappie dog food. There is a bit of info going around on Facebook saying the harmful things it contains and that it can lead to tumours and other problems.. Now in two minds whether to change? There are a few comments on there of people which have fed their dogs on it in the past and they have ended up with internal tumours, nose and mouth tumours too..! Thoughts or expleriences please? :)
 
Utter garbage as a food. Contains LOTS of nasties, including carcinogenic substances. Its like giving kids mcdonalds every single day of their lives as their only source of nutrition.
I wouldnt feed it- ever.
Cinnamontoast has a list of all the nasty stuff in it I believe. or do a search on here for Bakers- lots of threads saying its poo.

It's rubbish, basically McDonalds for dogs. It's full of carcinogens and dyes to make it look appealing (Look what colour your dog's poo is when it comes out. I can tell a Bakers fed dog this way). Read the back of the box and see how minimal the meat content is.

The only reason it is popular is because it is owned by a huge conglomerate, had an advertising budget of world conquest proportions, and you can buy it in the supermarket.

Chappie is OK, there's not much bad in it but there's not much good in it either. It's good for sensitive tums as such as it is so bland, vets and police forces would use it for sensitive dogs.
 
Ingredients- Cereals (minimum 4% rice in the green and orange kernels), Meat and animal derivatives (Minimum 4% fresh meat in the moist meaty chunks, minimum 4% beef in the moist meaty chunks), Vegetable protein extracts, Oils and fats, Various sugars, Derivatives of vegetable origin (0.5% beet pulp in the brown and red kernels), Minerals, Vegetables (minimum 4% vegetables in the green and orange kernels). With antioxidants, coloured with and preserved with EC additives.

Why on earth does a food with 4% meat get called 'meaty' and why on earth is there a requirement for sugars, colours and preservatives in dog food???
 
Could someone share the link that is going ground on fb? I'd like to share it! I sadly know quite a few that feed that rubbish!
 
I used to feed my dog Bakers but read something online that it was full of bad stuff, same as Pedigree to. My dog now has wagg dry food and the occasional tin of wet food (which she isn't keen on), she also has sardines, mince and chicken
 
I would never use bakers, done it once never again not when I have to spend the morning washing the carpets.
Horrid stuff and the smell is gross
 
My cousin's husband used to feed it - my cousin would tell him that it was the equivalent of feeding them McDonalds!

Nevertheless it wasn't until I confirmed this that he swapped to Skinner's, hooray :) Glad to see it isn't just my husband that doesn't believe me sometimes!
 
Thanks everyone that's fab, I bought two of the smaller boxes so will finish them and move on to something else. I was feeding Wagg but I'm trying to help with weight gain as the one dog has come to me terribly thin recently so need to gradually build it up. I was under the influence that Bakers was 'amazing' and they do make it out to sound the be all and end all..! So at £2 a box I didn't have a good enough reason at the time to say no as I had always heard the 'good' things about it. I will keep them on the Chappie as my other dog has a sensitive tum and she does like this and can keep it down too.. Could anybody suggest a bag of dry food which contains more meat and is actually doing good for them? Not too pricey though a I'm feeding 3 on it.. One of the vets suggested earlier a £40 bag and my eyes almost popped out of my head after paying around £14 for Wagg..! :)
 
Pets at home do a good food called Fishmongers. Around £20-25 for large bag. No grain at all. Over 55% fish and the rest is veg
 
I raw feed but I'm feeding Fishmongers out of my pocket as a training aid at the moment and I am well impressed, large fish content, good poops, nice size of kibble and the small bags were on offer in P@H.

I was feeding Frolic as a treat before that as I had seen someone recommend it as tracking bait on another forum. Lots of promises about meat content on the front (again 4-6% on the back!!!) and the poops were radioactive, sloppy and bright orange. Luckily it was only a small bag.
 
Skinners duck & rice is about the best cheaper food. Not too hard to find and they also do it in smaller bags if you don't want to buy 15kg straight off.

I am feeding my cocker spaniel bakers weight watcher food and I couldn't understand why he was still piling it on! Stupid me for not actually checking the food out!
He is also having bouts of what we think are stomachs aches. He has a full day of pains every 5 minutes. He has been to the vets and had full bloods done, we had half back yesterday which were all clear and are waiting for the pancreatitis results to come in tomorrow.
I am going to go and buy new food first thing tomorrow!

Any recommendations for a healthy food to help loose the weight?
 
Skinners as mentioned and Red Mills is good and won't break the bank. Chappie wet is very bland, again, as mentioned, the dry stuff is pants and I wouldn't touch Wagg either.

I think it's the same with everything - buying pups, buying dogs, look beyond the sales pitch and do your own research - when people are selling things they will tell you what you want to hear!!
 
Barking heads food looks good, after reading on here and other places that the cheaper foods are pretty poor I found Barking Heads has between 45 and 50% meat content with no rubbish included. Only the diet food has 25% meat.

I'll let you know in 6 weeks once I've got the wee man home how it goes down :)
 
For wet easy to feed stuff for quality and price I don't think you can beat the wainwright's trays from P@H. Mine gets these and the wainwrights biscuits (although might give fishmongers a go now) and he is full of energy and has a very shiny coat, and normal poos! :D
 
r.e this fishmongers food- do you think it's better than fish4dogs? Not a huge amount of difference with price as fish4dogs is £36 for 12kg on amazon but if the fishmongers is better I might be tempted to swap... although rosie spaniel does love the fish4dogs... hmmmm!
 
I was feeding fish4dogs Twizzel but then they changed the recipe. The Finest is now not so good (that's what I could get for £36 a bag online) and you want the Superior, but I could not find it online cheaper than £50!!! Fishmongers is the equivalent to the Superior from what I can see and better than the new Finest.
 
I might give Betsy another go on the Fishmongers.

She was on it for a little while and LOVED it, decent poos and kept a nice weight. But she itched :(

She was on Applaws for a long while and it has been the best food for her by far (and most expensive...) But PAH no longer stock it. ATM she is on Raw / nature diet trays but I do like to have a kibble in the house.

If I can't find a good alternative that is easy for me to pick up I will order Applaws online. Its just the big bags cost a small fortune (we usually buy a little bag)

Anyone got any other ideas? She itched on JWB :(
 
There is nothing good about Bakers, or wagg! My collie was fed Bakers for a few years as we thought it was supposed to be a good dog food. My dog suffered from stomach upsets quite frequently. Little did we know it was the bakers and since being taken off it they have completely stopped!

Mine is fed arden grange senior for the joint supplements (11 years old collie) But I would also recommend fishmongers and skinners or raw.

afraid I'm in the camp of wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. In general I am not a fan of commercial dog foods and feed mine barf unless there is absolutely no other option.
