Anyone else had their horses BAL scoped? Poor boy had a cough over Christmas, seemed to be well and truly on the way out (helped along by a few management changes, soaking hay, dust free bedding etc) but last night it came back with a bit of a vengeance despite no changes in environment so booked in for a scope next week. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with it/what to expect/what they found?

Yes my cob has been scoped with a trach wash and then when that showed nothing up and he still had problems he had a BAL done. This showed up inflammatory markers that led to COPD diagnosis. A scope is different to a BAL. The scope was the camera going down and also a tube that allowed a sample to be taken from the trachea. The BAL was a longer thinner tube without the camera and takes samples from further into the lungs.

Yes, had a scope, TW and BAL done in the same session. It's not the most pleasant of experiences for the horse, even when well sedated.
In my horses case it was to collect a sample of discharge relating to poor performance and increased respiratory effort. Diagnosis was eventually IAD.
