Evening,

I'm having some problems with my boy on the lunge. He's 5 but a bit of a late starter, I broke him and backed him in April and he's being going great. Admitedly mainly hacking but in the last 6 weeks or so we have started having lessons and doing some more serious schooling. He's the first one I've broken it so it is slightly like the blind leading the blind.

It's taken me ages to crack lunging with him, I mainly long reined him before backing as it was easier to do on my own. My problem is that is isn't very balanced, we are getting there with me on. On the lunge he pulls the line to full stretch and I feel like I'm anchoring him. I lunghe him off the bit (usually over the top of his head or on a connector thing that clips to both bit rings) as he has tanked off a few times so I like having control! Problem is he literally almost crashes into the walls and I have to pull him in. If I lunge him on a smaller circle the line is taught like he's leaning on it. I currently work him in lose side reins and when I manage to have a loose lunge he starts to work down and nicely then he hits a corner and leans again.

Any tips or exercises on how I can get him to hold himself up! I really want to be able to get him to canter on the lunge so I can teach him the voice command as at the moment the only time we canter under saddle is out hacking in straight lines! Before anyone asks he's not some humungous beast, he's a 13.2hh fell pony, so there is a lot of him but it's all bulk!!

Cheers (hobnobs for getting through my mamouth essay!!)
