Hi, i have been recommended to feed my mare Balanced Horse Feeds Show mix, as she is forward going so not in need of energy but need a conditioning feed as she drops weight quickly.

Im thinking of feeding her Balanced horse feeds Show mix, top spec alfalfa and saracen biolife 2000.

Anyone have any tips etc on this feed, a bottle of wine for the author of each reply

Balanced Horse Feeds Show Mix contains maize, barley, wheat and oats, so not really the most unheating of feeds! Plus only 10 MJDE/kg so not the most calorific either!

Something like Spiller's Response Slow Release Cubes would be lower in starch (and therefore less fizziness) but higher in calories, so more weight gain. I would probably feed with a high calorie chaff such as Alfa A Oil (12.5 MJDE/kg).

Saracen Biolife is a balancer, so should not really be fed alongside the full amount of a complete cube/mix. I would either chose to feed the balancer plus non-cereal straights (ie Alfa A Oil, Speedibeet, dried grass chaff/pellets, high-oil products) OR the recommended amount of a complete cube/mix.

Hi, I used to feed BHF's Show Mix - its an excellent feed. Its nearly 20% fibre too, so good for slow release energy. I only stopped feeding it because my stockist is quite far away! Its great for condition, but I never had any problems at all with it being 'heating'

Will she eat nuts? We use Saracen show pencils - my mare usually loses weight by the end of the show season with all the travelling etc, but this year the Saracen feed did the trick - she's 15hh and she has a scoop of alfa and half of show pencils 2xday, plus a cup of Saracen's equijewel when she's actually away at a multi day show. She has looked fabulous all season and won her first in hand championship this year at the grand age of 10!

Hi, try calling the BALANCED horse feeds helpline, its free and they really do seem to know their onions. don't be fooled by other people giving you advice in calories & what ingredients are heating or non heating, BALANCED horse feeds balance the ration to make it work. if you add maize to an exising ration of course it will be heating cos you've messed up the balance...Duh! same as adding balancers, it overbalances everything and the horses often go wrong because of adding. I've fed Showmix for nearly fifteen years and I'll never change. Ask Amy Stovold, she's a fan too. ps I don't think that its expensive if you don't have to or need to add anything. pps where do I get my wine

have a look at the BALANCEd' website, you can buy direct if you buy 10 bags at a time, I got 20% off my first order as well.
I had to get a mate to share the order but since its made the day before its sent you get 3months life before the best before date comes up. so we buy every other month. a couple of the other girls on the yard have started to use it as mart looks so good, I hope to be able to get enough bags together to get it cheaper soon. good luck

Scurrymad, you make me laugh! Why do you need to order Balanced Horse Feed when your profile indicates you are from Byhurst Farm which is where Balanced Horse Feeds are made! LOL!

And actually knowing the digestible energy content and ingredients of a feed is very important indeed, so don't rubbish that!

I have fed balanced horse feeds show mix to my four year olds this year - its put excellent condition on and hasn't heated them up at all.
I think its cheaper too, rather than having to feed a chaff, mix, balancer, etc...

Sorry scurrydriving but your name was the first giveaway to your identity and a quick look at your profile confirms it!

I've fed it in the past for weight gain, though it wouldn't be my first choice these days. And as for this post, well it has thoroughly put me off the brand - if you're going to try and do viral marketing, at least try and do it well. Of course it is important to know calories and digestible energy, and as for 'balancers overbalancing and making horses go wrong' - what complete nonsense. Horses, like humans, have this great thing called a digestive system, which is extremely good at either storing or excreting nutrients which are not needed.

yes, surely feeding too many nutrient means the body extcreats the unnecessary amount and all thats happened is you have wasted money?

I bought the bag of feed today and have opened it up, it does look good, a high fibre element in it which is nice. She is currently fed saracens releve, saracen minty chaff and saracen biolife (god i sound like i work for saracens dont it? honest i dont!)

I gave neddy a handful which she gobbled down, considering she is a fussy eater it was a good sign

how much would i need to feed to put weight on? she is in light to medium work but i have noticed she has started dropping weight already as the grass has let off.
