I have a 17hh ID x, he is a good doer at the perfect weight but can put on weight relatively easily, currently he is on a handful of alfa a light chaff with selenevite e and his glucosamine. He is in light work as on a rehab programme after his KS surgery, being lunged for 40 mins a day in the pessoa 6 x a week. He needs to put on more muscle, i understand this is mainly achieved through correct work but i am wondering if an increase in the right food would help? Do i go onto a balancer or stick with the multi vits?

thanks

I've tried a few of the light balancers and think I've settled on Spiller's Light Balancer as being the best one for both price, content and palatibility. I've also got a big good doer and I definitely can tell the difference when she's been on the balancer for a few weeks as supposed to just her multi vit/min supplement.

Have you looked at Topspec All In One? It's a supplement which is supposed to contain everything its balancer contains. I cant tell you much about it as they dont publish the nutritional details of their products on their websight and insist on writing to you with the info when you telephone or email to ask them. I dont give my personal address out willy nilly and asked them to email me the details. They wouldn't. They've lost me as a potential customer because of it, but if you dont mind marketing mail then you might want to check it out for yourself.

Thank you, i have looked into all the balancers and your right the Spillers light looks like a good diet. Topspec did send me some samples and a brochure but they seem expensive compared to the multivit route.

Think i will copy you and try him on the spillers light, thank you for your help :)

Im using a relatively new one iv found- its called 'keep me sound' by first for horse and ive found it fantastic, its a powder form, rather than a pellet so lower calorie. Its great for my boy and contains stuff to help all round well being including feet, muscling, coat, digestion, multivit and mineral etc :)

Ooh sounds interesting. I'll check it out. :)

Iv sat down before and compaired a lot off vit supplements and balancers and equimins advance and pro hoof are by far better, way ahead of a lot off balancers which have such low levels in I wouldn't bother with them.
It's a nightmare out there

Yep, I agree about feeds and balancers not containing enough of certain things. I've had my pasture and forage analysed and know exactly what my horse needs and no manufactured feed out there (even fed at the recommended level) along with ad lib hay/grass comes anywhere near 'balancing' or meeting the requirements. Not even the really expensive high spec ones. I think a lot of people are being lulled into a false sense of security thinking these compounds feeds are supplying everything their horse needs. In some cases, most cases perhaps, this is likely to be far from the truth.

I would use a light balancer - to add the muscle you need good quality protein and the balancer will provide all the vitamins/minerals needed as well good protein without the calories of a feed. My mare is an extremely good doer but hasn't put any weight on despite being on a stud balancer. She is pregnant but early and I was a little worried the stud balancer would put too much weight on her but hasn't and am really pleased with it.
