My cob is in light work at the moment, so I have cut out hard feed completely and he is only on hi-fi lite, garlic, oil and salt.

Is it best to feed a balancer like baileys lo-cal or topspec, or juts add a vitamin and mineral supplement to his hi-fi?

A vit/min supplement normally just contains vit/mins, wherease balancers contain extras such as protein, probiotics/prebiotics, etc as well as vit/mins. So you have to decide whether you think your horse needs those 'extras'.

Personally, I feel on summer grazing extra protein is unlikely to be necessary and probiotics/prebiotics are of most use to horse's whose gut function has been comprimised in some way, such as through stress, illness, antibiotic treatment etc.
