I am considering feeding a balancer through the summer but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the recommended amount to feed to an approx 500kg horse? If I know the amounts I can work out the cost per week. I would be interested to hear about any brand not just the ones stated in the title. If it works, and it's cost effective then fill me in! Thanks

I know that they topspec web says how much on average to feed, I thing it mayb 500g not totally sure tho not at all good with figures, they also have a very good helpline! This is the one that I use and would recomend my veteran does amazing on the topspec senior balancer, since I swapped her to it last year she has looked a lot better and her joints have been better, was hunting once a week last year, only reason hasn't been this year is beacause she did a check ligament, kept her on it and after about 4 months in a stable her legs Neva swelled once, not bad for a 23 yr old who before she was on topspec used to get a filled back leg is left in too much!!

Try the new spillers ones. They seem to be coming out cheaper than the others. For example, I used to use the Baileys Low cal - it cost about £25 per sack and I had to feed 3 cups a day. I now use the Spillers Low Cal and again use 3 cups and I pay about £15 in my local feed shop - I think RRP is £19.99. We normally use cups to measure and a 500kg horse is normally about 3 cups.

You may get away with a little less but my ID gets 4 cups a day and a bag of balancer lasts him a month, and my ISH who has 3 cups lasts just over a month.

I had seen the spillers ones and the price looks attractive although I wasn't sure if anybody had tried it and liked it yet.

For Topspec comprehensive balancer I think it's 1g per 1kg of your horse's bodyweight. Eg. mine weighs aroung 550kg, so that's 550g of topspec per day.

I feed Bluechip and I think for my old 14.1 pony it was 250g a day. My current 14.3 has 400g

I found topspec fizzed him up although he looked well on it.

Amy, they are brilliant, I did a lot of research into it as mine have done beautifully on Baileys but there is barely any difference and they look brilliant on it. as I have a 16.3 ID and 16.2 ISH that are both good doers, but due to weight need to have a fair amount of balancer, it works out so cheap, they have that and a few handfuls of chaff for supplements and are well covered. My friend gets through a sack of mix, chaff and beet weekly with hers and he doesn't look anything like mine :) give them a go!!

lochpearl I think I will. I'll give spillers a ring and see which one they recommend as my girl will be 16 in a couple of months and not sure if she'd need the original one or the senior.

sounds good, then I would find out the RRP and then call around some stockists, when they first started selling them there was £5 off a bag and my local place was selling it at £10.23 - neddless to say I bought enough until it expired - I think they got wind of me when I ordered 10 bags in one go lol!!! BUt as I said, some people have to order it in and others plain mess the price up and you get it cheaper lol

i use blue chip original mine is 15.2hh and on 500g (i think ) a day

he has only been on it a couple of weeks and his coat seems better

have heard fabulous reviews about blue chip too
