Won’t hijack the other thread but seeing some responses on adding magnesium oxide during spring/summer:

- I tend to use forageplus winter balancer all year round but thinking I should switch to summer now. This means less vit E but one of mine needs to lose weight so the micronised linseed in the winter one may not be a good idea (but presumably it’s very low amounts so may not make a difference)?
- the FP has 12g of mag ox, is it advisable to add more mag ox to get to 25g a day? My other horse might benefit from more magnesium in his diet.

I’ve not done a forage analysis at this yard but am using the balancer based on nutritionist analysis of their hard feed, and typical findings/forage analysis done around the area.

Thx!

Mine is on this. I switch to the summer balancer when he moves to longer turnout and gets more grass.

I don't feed anything additional. Since feeding forageplus I've noticed his mane doesn't sun bleach anymore and he stays darker. I heard that if he has sufficient magnesium his mane won't sun bleach. He must have enough without feeding extra.

I feed as much magnesium as makes their wee go cloudy, at which point they are peeing it out. Then I reduce it a bit.

whats the basis for 25gms of elemental magnesium to be fed.

I use the winter one. He went off of it once and went footy so I know it does him well. Was thinking of switching to the summer one as the vit e is synthetic so doesn't add much and not nearly what he actually needs (I feed separately at high levels being an EPM horse to begin with).

I have debated adding additional magnesium because it is something that just gets peed out. I know for me, magnesium makes all the difference to my stress and anxiety levels as well as general creakiness (I've been hard on my body and continue to be hard on it. I definitely know when I've forgotten to take it!)

also debating this re magnesium. I feed forage plus Laminae. Which provides 14gms magnesium. Was wondering about topping this up?

Interestingly I have just calculated what the 3kg of Saracen's releve mix he also has a day provides.

So he would seem to get 24.5gms magnesium a day, and a fair bit amino acids lysine and methionine from the Releve as well as a reasonable amount of Sodium.

I give 50ml of salt, the Laminae balancer has 10gms salt, and the releve mix has 14gms

The zinc / copper / biotin / vitamin E in the Releve are fairly low.

I have been feeding the Laminae balancer at 66% to account for the vitamins and minerals in the Releve, which feels about right. (The figures about assume I was feeding the full rate of Laminae balancer)

I have found feeds in general to be surprisingly low on vit e specifically. Mine requires high doses - if he is depleted then a solid 8,000-10,000 iu/day for a few weeks and then drop down to around 6,000 iu seems to work well. My apologies I feed the winter hoof and skin (I forgot they were different balancers)

I’m currently across - Releve, FP Laminae balancer and extra supplementation feeding 6,752 iu of Vitamin E. But if the grass ever significantly grows in this field I might cut down the supplementation
