hi guys,

During the summer months my cob has just been on a small amount of happy hoof morning and night (most likely not the recommended amount) but just enough to have his garlic and not feel left out:) I would say he is an ok/good doer.

normally in winter I put him on hifi (not sure whether to stick on happy hoof now or go back to hifi as fairly similar in price but hifi a lot more in the bag!) and a bit of purabeet. now im thinking of adding in a balancer to give him vits and mins and for general goodness. He is susceptible to energy feeds so need something with out the fizz! was thinking low.cal, spillers lite or top spec cool balancer but unsure what seems to be the best.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi sh90.... my humble advice would be to go take a look at the Forage Plus website. Sarah Braithwaite is fantastic at putting you on the right tracks in terms of feeding what your cob will need through the four seasons...as it does change!

I would never now go to anyone else since I spoke to her and she explained in great details to me on the phone what my EMS/barefoot cob would need to support his feet and general well being through the year.

Her minerals on the face of it look expensive at first compared to other products/brands on the market. However I have total faith in what I add to my boy's feed now and that it comes from the purest sources and he's doesn't have anything more added to his feed other than what he needs! What I buy and costs me approx £100 including delivery, usually last me a good 3 months if not more, as I do sometimes 'tweak' it here and there!

I'm a big fan of FP and will never ever now use anything else and my boy's feet and health speak for themselves :)

If it's possible for you I would at the very least have a 'forage analysis' done (wether it be hay or haylage you feed), as it will go some way to telling you what your boy is already getting from his hay or haylage, whichever you feed.

I really rate Topspec lite. I feed it to both my good doer ponies, one is 3 and the other 23 and they both look fab and it doesn't fizz them up at all. I would suggest only feeding your HiFi/Beet with any balancer though rather than Happy Hoof as that is a complete feed, meaning it has Vits + Mins added and you shouldn't add any extra when feeding a balancer

Top spec balancer sent my horse loopy when I was giving it to him on box rest. Currently giving him probalance made by progressive earth - they have an eBay shop. IMHO it's a great balancer and great for skin and hooves, mine looks fab on it.

thanx for your help guys. When I was competing he was on topspec cool balancer and looked fab so going to try topspec lite with hifi and see how he is on it if not next thing to try:)
