Hi all, I'd appreciate thoughts on balancers and supplements.

I have a 8yr old Connie mare who was diagnosed and treated for ulcers last yr and diagnosed with arthritis changes in her neck, which were medicated with steroids March 2024. She is currently in full work and going well. She is a good doer on a track system, access to hedges but grass is very short with a lib hay and access to salt lick. She was on soaked hay all winter, but I've stopped that as she is now in full work and a good weight.
She has a shiny coat and looks good.
I'm reviewing her feed as I just keep adding extras and it's costing. Currently she is on
Thunderbrooks Healthy Herbal
thunderbrooks synergy (balancer)
Equine 74 (ulcer supplement)
Equinectar (hindgut ulcers)

I'm considering adding a specific extras supplement with Glucosamine, MSM, vit c, Yucca Schidigera powder, bosweillia got muscle and joint health

I'm questioning whether I can change the Synergy to a cheaper option maybe Equine 365? (I have used this before but finding it hard to compare to Synergy) or I am open to other options.

That’s a lot of supplements. Has your vet recommended that you feed them?

I have a Connie mare too who was also treated for ulcers last year. She is fed Baileys Light Chaff and Baileys Lo Cal balancer along with hay and some controlled grazing. I think that provides everything she needs.

Good grief, why on earth are you feeding all that? Does she have a deficiency? Have you done any testing?

Do you know why she got ulcers? If they were treated and clear there's probably no reason to be feeding the stomach specific supplements.

I don’t think that’s necessarily true! Ponease maybe! Equinectar has some science and testing behind it.

I would look into feeding oily herbs it's proven to help the gut and alot cheaper than all that also Aloe vera is proven to help prevent ulcers and again not expensive.

I feed oily herbs all the time and have fed aloe vera in times of stress as a prevention for ulcers.

I've tried everything going for faecal water in my mare and nothing made any difference. It seems to be worse when she has longer/coarser grass and in the winter when she has more haylage. The only thing that has any effect is Protexin gut sponge so she's on it permanently now and I try to keep her on the lowest amount possible. X
