I wonder though once mold got in, maybe through accidental water ingress, whether mold is now living invisibly in the container, hence it keeps coming back?

Maybe. I guess I should give it a good clean out and let it dry properly, then try again with another bag. I store these in a large chest freezer, i also have moisture catchers in it.....although the never seem to capture any moisture so it cant be damp in there!
