Did you see the article about the balancing strap that Ulla Sla.... uses? I might try one (homemade with baler twine

)

Has anyone tried it?

In case you haven't a clue what I talking about its a 10" piece of leather which clips to the d rings either side of your saddle and you use it to maintain a steady contact. Ulla used it in the Olympics and its dressage legal.

Yup flash strap does the trick nicely we use them alot at our yard, as christmasNight says they are becoming a bit hard to come by as most of our horses are in plain canvessons!!!

yes I use one on my boys all the time - got one from hickstead think it cost me £7 - flash straps are great but the strap is better as I find I can hold it better. Worth their weight in gold if you ask me - don't ride a horse without one now - always have it in my pocket!!!!

And another vote from me!

Nearly all my pupils use them. I find it particularly useful for helping riders sit to the medium/extended trot and also for a horse that is very onesided and finds it difficult to go equally into the contact. By taking the 'handle', as I call it, on the soft side, in effect you have a side rein on that side and it can help to give the horse a more secure, steady rein to work into.

All my saddles have them on!

Think I will be buying one! My young horse is so sharp that it may give me some hope of staying with him! (along with some velcro jods!)

My horse is heavy on one rein so I will be trying one, I've never been able to sit to his big trot yet without hanging off the side laughing or moving at zero miles per hour

Sorry to sound really thick, but how do you use them? Is it just something to hold on to? Tried to find a picture of Ulla with one but i cant.

Balancing straps are a really good gadget as they can "anchor" you in the saddle ,(if you get my drift?), virtually all the people in our old yard in Germany used them, certainly saves socking ned in mouth, I have them on all oiur saddles, Calcutts in Sutton scotney copied 1 that I brought from Germany, or Inchs did have them in their catalogue.

Ok thanks! Found the bit about them in H&H aswell, look very good, i always think it is ridiculus that you cant use a neckstrap in some dressage comps, so they are a good idea.

I tried it today and I did have a nicer canter as he couldn't pull me out of the saddle and he had a even contact in both reins. Its a bit difficult to steer with and sitting trot is going to take a lot more practice
